The best snorkelling is Egypt. By far. There are a few reasons why you may not want to go there (I would go tomorrow given half a chance) but the resorts in Marsa Alam are right on the beach and lovely. Just stay out of Hurghada as it’s awful.

Newusernamee · 20/06/2023 22:33

Maldives and Fiji were both incredible when we went. I’m terrified of fish though so snorkelling was both amazing and panic inducing there!

floppybit · 20/06/2023 22:44

Another vote for Egypt. Amazing coral reef right in front of the hotel

SallyWD · 20/06/2023 22:45

We went to Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt. Amazing snorkeling! Very clear, warm seas full of beautiful tropical fish, very close to the shore. I was swimming amongst them. Amazing!

OliviaFlaversham · 20/06/2023 22:47

Another to say Egypt. We stayed in Hurghada and it was quiet and beautiful. Lots of clown fish, sea horses, zebra fish to see even if only up to your knees!

Scottishlanza · 20/06/2023 22:50

Playa Chica, Puerto del carmen,lanzarote

We went to Cyprus last summer and my two teenage sons spent a lot of time snorkelling, saw lots of fish and sea turtles. We stayed at Crystal Springs Hotel , had a lovely calm bay right outside. I would highly recommend this hotel, excellent reviews and videos on youtube.

Maldives, breathtaking.

The Islands themselves are small and could otherwise be a bit dull for young kids.

Snorkling’s second to none, though if that’s your main thing.

jackstini · 20/06/2023 23:15

Closer & cheaper - Egypt. Sharm el Sheik or Hurgada

Further and more luxurious, Maldives

Both have beaches you can just walk out for ages up to waist/shoulder height and bend over to see amazing fish

We've had wonderful times snorkeling in Southeast Asia (Malaysia, Indonesia, Philippines) and in Aruba.

Orban · 20/06/2023 23:28

Lanzarote is great for snorkeling. A few of the resort beaches like playa del jablillo have rocky breakwaters so the water is calm and clear (even when you're just having a quick dip at the edge there are loads of fish), others like playa Bastian have rocky pools which are nice to explore. Then in the national park up in papagayo there are really fine sand beaches with pristine waters. I mean the whole island is really environmentally clean but papagayo is especially good.

Best snorkelling was Thailand and Maldives. Both amazing. Egypt also pretty good.

dontknowwasmadetoknow · 21/06/2023 20:56

Have a look at Rixos premium seagate.

They have a reef right off the beach and also a water park so great for teenagers,we are going with ours in a few weeks

SwordToFlamethrower · 21/06/2023 20:57

Dorset coast, Dursley Dore is great

PizzaPastaWine · 22/06/2023 00:26

My DC have been happy with a snorkel in Greece/Croatia/Menorca.

Plenty of differences of fish including octopus.

Porthia · 22/06/2023 00:30

Depends on your budget and what you want to see. Obviously you will have amazing snorkelling in the tropics on coral reefs - Thailand, Maldives etc

but you can also see a lot in the Mediterranean! Last summer we snorkelled in southern France!

Are you seriously recommending Hurghada for the OP and her children after recent events?!

Flatandhappy · 22/06/2023 06:22

Vanuatu is amazing but might be too far from the UK?

Vebrithien · 22/06/2023 06:47

Turkey, near Feithiye. Took a boat ride which stopped at several small islands, including St. Nicolas' Island. Could snorkel through the ruined buildings, as the land level has dropped, due to an earthquake long ago.

We saw so many fish, octopus, sea urchins.

Tui have a couple of hotel options in the area.

Feithiye itself is great, or Olu Denieze (spelling?) is around the headland.

There is no reason not to recommend it, the OP can make up her own mind. Hurghada covers a large area, we are going to Makadi Bay which is classed as Hurghada but its over 20 miles away from Dream beach where the incident happened.
I am another advocate for Egypt for snorkelling without having to go long haul. If you want long haul Cuba is amazing too

Xrays · 29/06/2023 08:06

On a smaller scale Ibiza is amazing - we were really surprised how many fish Ds saw just snorkelling around the quiet beaches we found (go to the Cala Pada end, not near the main busy areas). There’s a lot of boat trips you can go on to take you to quieter areas. Tons of fish! Ds and dd loved it (11 and 20).

You wouldn't go just for the snorkelling but we're in Kos at the moment and my teenagers have wanted to snorkel every day. Beautiful clear water and snorkelling off the beach and boats.

We're not talking Great Barrier Reef standard but lots of different fish to see and nice warm seas

In fairness, I just had to Google ‘Hurghada incident’ as had no idea what you were referring to. Your comment was helpful in this regard as I now know but could have been more helpfully written!

We had fun snorkling with our kids at the Keys in Florida.
Before we had kids we snorkeld in Hawaii, also great with the reef and the seaturtles but it takes so much time to get there.

BarrelOfOtters · 12/07/2023 07:25

Amazing snorkelling in St Lucia, kitts and Nevis and, more reachable, Egypt. But also warm seas and enough to see in Med.
