My grown up kids did this last year. Train is about 50 min I think. Pisa Airport is very easy as pretty small.

PinkTonic · 20/06/2023 15:38

I have. It’s very easy. You get the train from the airport to Pisa Centrale and there are lots of trains. No problem at all.

gogohmm · 20/06/2023 15:39

Train is cheap, book on the Trainline app pisa airport is tiny

keyboardkat · 20/06/2023 15:39

Yes, it is a great idea. You can then get the train to Florence and if you have time to the fabulous Lucca aswell. All on the one line and the fares are not expensive. See Trenitalia website/app. Pisa itself even on a tight schedule is worth seeing for the tower. A few hours max.

It might turn out that you could fly into or out of Pisa and vice versa with Florence if the fares work out better for you.

Try a flight to Bologna - small airport also within shouting distance of Florence

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 20/06/2023 15:42

Florence airport is notoriously I’ll equipped and has a runaway which is often closed to larger planes if the wind is in the wrong direction. Go to Pisa. ( or actually Bologna is also okay with the train link).

Moredarkchocolateplease · 20/06/2023 16:03

I've done pisa twice. Super easy. Trains are great and straight into central Florence.

raspberrytart · 20/06/2023 16:12

Yes, we did this at Easter. Train from pisa airport to train station only takes 5 mins.5 euros.
Then regular trains to Florence.

Crikeyisthatthetime · 20/06/2023 16:33

I made the mistake of flying in and out of Florence airport. Never again. Our flight was delayed, delayed again for about 8 hours, finally departed half full in spite of a plane full of passengers waiting to board, and when we landed we discovered that they hadn't put any luggage in board.
Other Brits from our hotel had booked taxis then train to Pisa, it dawned on us why that was as we sat waiting in Florence airport.

Redebs · 20/06/2023 16:51

Very straightforward when we did it a few years ago

hettiethehare · 20/06/2023 17:03

We flew to Pisa and got the train as well as the direct flights to Florence were hideously expensive. Was very easy and we then headed back to Pisa with time to spare to go and see the Leaning Tower and left our luggage at the train station from memory.

Georgyporky · 20/06/2023 17:30

We had a BA holiday from London City to Florence last year. The price for the holiday, including a city centre hotel with B&B, was not much more than the cost of flights.

Passerillage · 20/06/2023 17:35

We're going this summer and going via Pisa. It was a pain in the backside trying to fly direct to Florence, and one of our party is flying from a (perfectly normal, capital city international) airport with ZERO direct flights to Fl. So we're going to Pisa, and if we feel the vibes, taking the bus/train/whatever into the city to look around for a couple of hours and then Florence, or going straight from Pisa airport to Florence. There's a bus, or a shuttle to Pisa train station and then a train.

Finding out that it's night on impossible to fly direct is an afternoon of my life I'm never getting back. 😐

Passerillage · 20/06/2023 17:41

NIGH on, not night on. :)

mirmc · 20/06/2023 20:06

I did a day trip from Bologna. It was only 37 minutes on the train.

orangelotus · 20/06/2023 21:20

oh thank you all so much as always great information!!
i'm going to check out bologna as i've always wanted to go there!!

LIZS · 21/06/2023 13:09

How direct a train is it to Lucca? Bologna itself is lovely.

Angelofthenortheast · 21/06/2023 13:18

Ryanair to pisa airport, then bus from pisa airport to florence centre.

The bus is cheaper and easier than the train in my opinion because it's right outside the arrivals lounge. You buy the bus ticket from the arrivals lounge.

StillWantingADog · 21/06/2023 13:19

pisa has for a very long time been the main airport for Florence. Train is easy and it’s very doable to stop and quickly see the leaning tower.

ReviewingTheSituation · 21/06/2023 18:19

There is a very clearly directed/marked train to Florence from Pisa airport. Possibly one of the easiest transfers out of an airport that I've ever done.

JeandeServiette · 21/06/2023 18:38

Coach from Pisa is very easy too. And quick.

BeanCounterBabe · 21/06/2023 19:44

Another vote for flight to Pisa and train to Florence. Very easy.
