Is 3 hotels in 10 nights too much?

So we are going to Rhodes soon. We are going to spend 5 nights in Lindos, then I want to go to Symi for 2 nights, and then do 3 nights in Rhodes Old Town.

The ferry between Rhodes and Semi takes 1h 20. So not too bad.

Just is 3 hotels in 10 nights too much hassle? We will get taxies from/to the port and airport to make it easier for us. We want a good mix of history, local culture, and relaxing by the sea.

Who is ‘we’? A few adults or small children?

burnoutbabe · 19/06/2023 12:06

We are 2 adults who do this a lot -trips to Japon say.

Packing cases are a must. Also need to be aware of what to do on data you swap hotels and hanging around with luggage.

Snellie · 19/06/2023 12:06

Sorry - that's a pretty important piece of info I missed!

No, just DH and I.

We do this a lot. Spreads the risk massively if one place you've booked isn't great.

LIZS · 19/06/2023 12:21

We are doing a similar trip in Italy, 2 nights, 5 nights then 2 nights.

Doidontimmm · 19/06/2023 12:33

We just did 3 places in 7 nights in Croatia. I love doing this!!

Last year we did 2 in the South of France.

Porthia · 19/06/2023 12:35

No, sounds great!

we recently did 3 hotels in 8 nights with 3 small children and that was fine so with just adults you’ll have a lovely time.

I hate being stuck in one place!

grimmers44 · 19/06/2023 12:36

No it's fine, we've done 4 in ten nights.

ItsCalledAConversation · 19/06/2023 12:38

Totally fine. Just look after your own luggage and don’t rely on transport - always have plan B in mind. You’ll have a blast and a proper adventure!

Think carefully about packing. It works for me to have different bags or “sections” for each place you’re staying, and then a large dirty washing bag separate so you’re not hauling 2 weeks worth of clothes and laundry into each place if that makes sense.

Lcb123 · 19/06/2023 12:39

For 2 adults that sounds fine. We travel around on hols and have a 2 night minimum in one hotel rule

Muffinbutton · 19/06/2023 12:46

We've just come home from doing 11 nights in 6 places. That was far too much and I found it really stressful.

What you're suggesting sounds really do able and should be fine. You've got a chance to settle in at each place.

yut · 19/06/2023 12:57

Depends on the type of holiday, when it's more of an exploration/road trip type holiday I wouldn't think twice about changing hotels every 1-2 nights. If it's more of a relaxing type holiday I'd probably want to be somewhere more central.

rookiemere · 19/06/2023 13:36

Yeah sounds doable, I'd pack super lightly cabin sized bag max.
We did a week in Tuscany and in hindsight wished we'd moved around a bit rather than having to drive each day.

trrk · 19/06/2023 13:44

We did basically the same trip several years ago and used buses for getting around on Rhodes and it was a great trip. I would spend at least one more night on Symi though so you have 2 full days to explore the island - maybe visit 2 different beaches. Rhodes Old town is quite compact and can be seen in a day. Now with a baby I prefer at least 4 nights for each stop.

bookmarket · 19/06/2023 13:50

We just did 7 nights and stayed in 3 different places. With more time 10 days would have been preferable to have had a bit more down time, so I think your plan sounds fine.

Only thing my to be aware of is can you leave your luggage somewhere before check in? Otherwise you're lumbered with your luggage too many times and that cuts in to time exploring.

cocksstrideintheevening · 19/06/2023 13:54

I think it's great but would sack off the Old Town, do it in a day from Lindos and more time on Symi

gogohmm · 19/06/2023 13:56

I regularly do road trips, different bed each night!

trrk · 19/06/2023 14:07

Since the ferry to Symi leaves from Rhodes town we found it made sense to spend 2 nights in town then morning ferry to Symi. After Symi come back and take a taxi or bus to Lindos and then taxi or bus to the airport at the end.

Verite1 · 19/06/2023 14:10

We did one night, six nights and four nights last summer in Italy (with two kids) and it was great. Especially as the six night place was a bit disappointing. We still were able to end on a high.

Bunnycat101 · 19/06/2023 15:33

Personally 3 in 10 would be too much for a relaxing holiday but ok if it was a ‘see the sights’ job but I would pack differently. Could you do it the other way round you so have you 5 day block at the end?

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 19/06/2023 15:42

I'd finish with the 5 day break if it was me, but don't see any problem with what you're planning. Packing cubes are your friend though, I'd have different ones for different stages of the trip to make packing and unpacking easier.

Snellie · 19/06/2023 15:51

So the 5 nights is “fly and flop” at Lindos. Then two nights for something different/a little more adventurous, and then 3 nights in Rhodes as dh is a history geek. It’s only 2 days in Rhodes old town as our flight is out early. Have to do it the way around that it is because the little house in Lindos is booked up on the other dates see x

We do this regularly on holidays. Make sure you keep an itinerary so you can keep a check of where you should be. Packing cubes with clothes for each stay is beneficial.

Georgyporky · 19/06/2023 18:59

We do a lot of touring holidays, often just 1 or 2 nights per hotel.
Packing cubes are essential for me. I pack e.g. daytime t-shirts & trousers/shorts separately from smarter evening wear, so at each new hotel I take out just what I need for the next day or 2.

Cakeorchocolate · 19/06/2023 19:01

I would say it's not.

DH and I regularly did holidays with lots of moving around, and sometimes do it now with dd in our motorhome, which is a bit more faff. Nice to get about different places though.
