Airline Cabin Bag Rules

Hi, travelling abroad (Spain) on Friday for the first time in years. I haven't actually flown since they introduced the new liquids rule, which was probably quite some time ago. We will just have cabin bags and are flying Easyjet. Appreciate if someone could clarify these rules for us: -

-does sunblock have to be decanted into clear bottles or is the 100ml container it is sold in ok? We are going to bring one each (party of 4)

-what about toothpaste, is the manufacturer's tube okay? The thought of squeezing it into a container - well, it would be easier to buy there.

-are blocks of soap okay and what about talcum powder? Is a white powder going to be challenged, again is it just easier to buy there and ditch before travelling home?

-can we bring our own bottles of water onto the plane or do these have to be bought once you have gone through security?

It was easier years ago wasn't it.

Hi, it's not as hard as you think tbh !

Yes sun lotion and toothpaste can be kept in their own containers but must be 100ml or less to get through security. You are probably easier buying at superdrug/Boots when you get through security.

Yes to soap and probably yes to talcum powder- as long as it's not a liquid it shouldn't set off the sensors.

For water you can bring an empty bottle through security. At Edinburgh there is a free water fountain through security,so we refill it there, the other option is buying a bottle once you're through. Water is generally expensive on the plane so I'd try and get sorted out in advance.

JC89 · 18/06/2023 19:28

Sunblock/ toothpaste should be fine in the container you buy them in, just make sure your liquid bottles are in a clear plastic bag (ziplock sandwich bag I think).

For water, you can take an empty water bottle through security then there are normally water fountains (or a cafe) where you can refill it.

Unless it's changed again that is, the last time I flew was nearly 4 years ago!

rookiemere · 18/06/2023 19:28

Oh and any liquids need to fit into a clear plastic bag, they usually have them at the airport.

toomuchlaundry · 18/06/2023 19:29

What size cabin bag have you got? They have recently changed the rules for them

TheChosenTwo · 18/06/2023 19:30

if you’ve just got cabin bags then I’d not bring any toiletries and just buy when you get there. You CAN buy it all once you’ve gone through security if you’ve got space to squeeze it into your hand luggage.
the sun cream is fine in its original container if it’s less than 100ml.
you can take an empty bottle through but fill it up airside.

barlie · 18/06/2023 19:32

The bags are a certain size and need to be sealed so you may struggle to get suncream in the bags of that small size. Would suggest you get in Boots the other side of security and then leave it on holiday if you don't finish it all.

gemstoneju · 18/06/2023 19:32

Oh god @toomuchlaundry ! I have bought rucksacks which measure 20x45x36,, please don't tell me they've got smaller! I know Ryanairs are ludicrously small and loads of people get caught out, but I bought these specifically for Easyjet.

You don’t need to decant anything unless it’s in a container that’s more than 100ml. Nothing needs to be in a clear bottle, but all liquids/pastes etc need to be in a small clear plastic bag. Soap should be fine outside the bag. But some airports can be funny, I’ve been stopped for having a powder compact out of my liquids bag before.
Water bottles have to be empty for security but you can fill them up after, most airports have water fountains post security. Have a good trip!

gemstoneju · 18/06/2023 19:34

Thanks for replies, does anyone know if Belfast International has one of those post-security water fountain thingies?

OP posts:
Kiitos · 18/06/2023 19:35

Just don’t stuff the rucksacks too full, then they can squash down to the allowed size if you get checked

Soonthen · 18/06/2023 19:36

Try click and collect at boots post security
and talc will get examined- so put in the tray at security instead of leaving in bag

Ok, scrub the talc idea! My son likes it after swimming but we are going self catering and there should be a minimarket nearby.

Check carefully, we’re flying easyJet in the summer and have checked 3 hold bags (at a cost of almost £140 EACH 😂 - almost as much as the flights!) but have just got basically small rucksacks each to carry on; I don’t think we’ll all take a carry on - the restrictions are strict! Sometimes they really enforce it at airports, I guess when the flights are full and they’re tight on space (although charging people doesn’t magically increase the amount you can squeeze into the plane!), and other times I’ve seen people checking in and they don’t care about the side of hand luggage. I’d rather be way under than risk being over!

soddingspiderseason · 18/06/2023 19:44

It's one clear plastic bag per person for the liquids and the bag size is quite small 20cmx 20cm? Make up/skin care mostly needs to go in the clear bag too, and it also needs to be sealable. We tend to buy sun cream/shampoo/shower gel in Boots once through security as it saves all the faffing trying to get stuff in the plastic bag.

Scottishlanza · 18/06/2023 19:47

I’ve found these are the best clear bags, you can have one each

There’s definitely a boots in Belfast airport so do a click and collect. You have to allow a few more days than usual. The advantage of it being post security is that you aren’t tied to 100 ml (but only buy enough for the trip cos you can’t get it back) and you get high street prices not airport prices and access to the full range not a limited range. Boots do paper bags so I purchase a WH Smith carrier and put my click and collect boots stuff in there, it’s now allowed on to the plane as ‘duty free’ in addition to your rucksack.

MaggieFS · 18/06/2023 19:51

You only have to decant if the original bottles are more than 100ml. You are only allowed one plastic bag per person for liquids with a max size of 1 litre capacity (I travel a fair bit and I've seen it all, people trying to get though with four bags, someone using the biggest ziploc I've ever seen!).

If you want/need larger toiletries you can buy them in departures after security but it's expensive.

Refill water after security or it that proves problematic, buy a bottle.

The EasyJet hand baggage rules are straightforward and clear. Everyone can bring a bag the size of yours and you'll have to put it under the seat in front of you. If you want a bigger bag, you can purchase the allowance for a larger bag and that can go in the overhead locker. Worth noting, you don't have to buy a larger bag for everyone e.g. if you just need a bit more space, you could buy one bigger bag for your group.

gemstoneju · 18/06/2023 19:53

Have already bought the sunblock and some clear plastic 100 ml bottles. I take it I can put four in one person's bag (in ziplock bag) each containing 100ml of lotion, if they carry nothing else? Can children carry the liquids in their rucksacks by the way - is it per passenger or just by adult passenger?

It really was easier years ago.

There are drinking water dispensers at Belfast International- I flew from there this morning!!

Liquids allowance is per passenger - we spread out all liquids between us all last year.

MaggieFS · 18/06/2023 22:50

It's per passenger and I don't think it matters whose bag they come out of. You'll all be together in for the X-rays so as long as there's max one bag per person it will be fine.

Midlander01 · 18/06/2023 22:59

Can I ask about carrying tweezers and razors in hand luggage? I've always paid for hold luggage as the faff of all this puts me off so much!

gemstoneju · 18/06/2023 23:31

According to the rules on their website, @Midlander01, tweezers, small scissors with rounded ends, and razors set in plastic (eg Bics) are all permitted in hand luggage.

OP posts:
SiouxsieSiouxStiletto · 19/06/2023 19:14

Yes it's definitely one small bag for liquids. We flew on Friday and the poor woman behind me was trying to take 4 clear bags full of liquids and was having some kind of meltdown about kissing her make up and toiletries away.

I'd get the super small toothpaste from somewhere like Superdrug and with order the Sun lotion to be picked up at boots after you've checked in or just buy it there.

I wouldn't trust getting talc whilst yours away though, we've looked for some for DD and it doesn't seem to be a thing where we are.

rookiemere · 19/06/2023 19:40

Possibly too late now OP, but for future reference when we were flying as a family of 3, I'd pay for one hold bag. Meant I could cram in the Soltan, travel wash and other stuff, plus buy some alcohol to bring home.
