7 nights 4* or 10 nights 2*

What do you reckon?

Is it better to go for 7 nights in a good 4 hotel (which would be 5 in Turkey...) or to go 10 nights in a 2*?

Both are likely to be a bit rough around the edges, the star system in Turkey is not equivalent to what you'd expect in the UK. I'd base it on reviews, have a look on trip advisor and see what people are saying. The difference between the 2 and the 4 could be a hairdryer in the bathroom.

That's rubbish. The criteria isn't foolproof but there are a number of facilities and standards expected in Turkey and a hairdryer won't cut it.

I'd definitely go better standard for less time.

"Actually to be fair I am staying in a nice 2 star hotel for the Lytham St Annes festival- its the St Ives, it has a pool, great homemade dinner and breakfast and generally all ok."

The dinner at the St Ives feels like something out of Phoenix nights. Don't do it! Worst fish pie ever. Order in the bar instead.

@jellyminelli I really liked the food at St Ives last time. The chef was there and he said he had made everything himself and the chicken curry was great. Plus using the Mr Whippy ice cream machine brought me right back to my teenage waitressing days.

It only cost £10 per person, so my expectations weren't high.

Just goes to show how everyone has a different experience.

Ah, it was £18 for the evening meal when we went and yes, also spoke to the chef. To be fair, one couple in our party enjoyed it. A few that already knew what it was like ordered in the bar and smiled knowingly when I told them about my meal.

Maybe it's a bit hit and miss. The potatoes were like rocks too. It's a lot like stepping back in time in there 🤣. I'd rather stay there than a 2 star in turkey though which I wouldn't even consider.

As with so many things in life, I think 'it depends'.

A holiday where the hotel is essentially the destination is very different to a packed activity holiday where you are in your room to sleep and that's about it.

The rating systems are also not foolproof. While a four star hotel will likely have some amenities that the two star lacks, if you don't use those amenities that can be irrelevant.

A shabby, run down four star with bar, lounge and ironing board in room and overworked, demotivated staff managed centrally as part of a global chain whose management are going through a rocky patch may indeed not be better than a two star spotlessly clean hotel with lovely staff who love being hospitable and for whom nothing is too much trouble.

Generally, I would have fewer days away to allow for some break between finishing work and going away to avoid the doing the washing at 2am and last minute packing nightmare.

DH and I have both travelled a lot for lewisite and business and could any hotel which is clean and where there is not a fire drill in the middle of the night when you have an early start to be a win.

I'm not sure this helps you, best to start with thinking carefully about what you really want and go from there. Even personal recommendations can be tricky, in the face of staff changes

Hope you get what's right for you.

7! Quality not quantity

NuffSaidSam · 25/06/2023 15:58

I'd look in detail at the two hotels and see what each offers/the reviews and then decide. It's also depends on what the holiday is about. If it's about the hotel and it facilities then you want the best available for your budget. If it's sightseeing and you need somewhere to sleep then clean, quiet and comfortable is all you need, use the extra money for sightseeing.

People who would dismiss a two star out of hand are shortsighted.

But generally, quality over quantity.

2* Christ

Is it a doorway?

keyboardkat · 25/06/2023 16:16

If it's a fly and flop, go for the higher rating, if a city break and it has a shower and a hairdryer go that one.

That's what I usually do, but I'm obviously not perfect! Hotels are either for sunbathing with a good pool, decent grub etc., or for sleeping in after days out wandering around.

Go for 7 in a 2*. As long as it’s clean then it’s fine.
