If you love holidays, what percentage of take home pay do you spend on holidays

Just for fun really.

If you love going on holidays, what % of household take home pay (so after taxes, pension, NI) do you spend on holidays?

Obviously income, expenses etc. will also play a part and I am fully aware just percentage might not mean a huge amount.

This is just me being nosey on a Friday. Please share if you are willing to.

Our holiday spending including booked ones this year is 12%. Thinking about booking one more before end of year that will push it to 16% of take home.

Pre children, 20-25%

That would be one long haul, one skiing a couple of shorter European breaks per year.

Coronationstation · 16/06/2023 14:12

goodness, I've no idea and it depends if you include money for food etc while away. This year I'm doing a week self catering in the UK (so most "spends" was food that I'd have incurred at home anyway), a week abroad half board with activities on site, and a few nights away in a premier inn type breaks. I'd guess between 5-10% of take home pay (but I'm only paying for 1 person!). I've got work needing doing on my house which would have paid for another good week away.

ksjsb · 16/06/2023 14:21

Post tax it's about 10% now our income is higher, but it's usually the first pot topped up when we have bonuses etc. We have been known to put more in our holiday pot a month than we pay off our mortgage 😂

HashBrownandBeans · 16/06/2023 14:25

Just booked one that is 10% of our take home, cheap holiday with the kids(still thousands of pounds!). If it were just me and DH would obviously be cheaper, but likely a more expensive holiday overall. We just did 14 days in a very luxurious location as a couple, for less that the 7 days in average location than the holiday with the kids

Lordofmyflies · 16/06/2023 14:26

Probably about 20%. That's enough for 2 weeks in the summer long haul, one week in Feb half term in the sun and a week in October city break overseas, for 4 adults as the DC are now over 14. I'm aware its a lot but its why I work full time and we have a pretty frugal lifestyle otherwise.

Billabongo · 16/06/2023 14:29

Just worked out its about 8% of our net pay. I'm surprised it's that much tbh. I wouldn't say we're holiday lovers particularly - that's just a cheapish French holiday in May half term, though we do very much enjoy it.

beachsandseaicecream · 16/06/2023 14:31

About 10%, which is about £10k a year.

cocksstrideintheevening · 16/06/2023 16:01

Around 12% but some of that is offset by not paying for stuff here so maybe 10%

This! Our dd is starting school this year. I had a look at school holiday prices and it’s eye watering. This will definitely push up our holiday spending by a significant amount. Not ideal but we also don’t want to give up on holidays.

About 20% including weekend breaks etc

doingthehokeykokey · 16/06/2023 16:16

This year we’ve spent all of my DH. So just about 50%.

WonderDays · 16/06/2023 17:08

Just over half, we have a 70k pension and spend 40k!!!!
It used to be 20k out of a 180k salary.

Verite1 · 16/06/2023 17:16

Main two holidays, probably between 10-12%. Mini breaks etc probably push it up to about 15% I guess.

Summerishereagain · 16/06/2023 17:18

About 8% ish. We are start in add in a UK destination each year so it will probably go up to 10%. If we could afford more then I would spend more.

fireflyloo · 16/06/2023 17:45

Prob about

fireflyloo · 16/06/2023 17:46

Posted too soon... about 15%. There's 3 of us and we do a skiing trip, canaries winter sun, summer all inclusive (med somewhere), centre parks weekend (new years) and a week in a cottage by the sea.

Thinkerbell78 · 16/06/2023 20:27

Around 20% I think

user147283178789889867 · 16/06/2023 20:36

19% this year as we have had four one-week holidays abroad. That is definitely excessive for us but after not being able to go away for three years for various reasons we went a bit mad. We don't have a massively high income either.

tillyandmilly · 16/06/2023 20:38

Wow!!!!

Mysteriousgirl2 · 16/06/2023 20:42

1%

We have 3DC who are all school age.

It’s camping for 4 days in Wales this year, which we are all really looking forward to.

FoodieToo · 16/06/2023 21:16

Lots ! Not sure about percentages but spend about 30k ( euro ) a year . We have 5 teens , mortgage just paid off ,old cars, not that bothered about clothes .

But love holidays - skiing , great sun holidays ,theme parks , many theatre weekends in London ( we live in Dublin ).

Go top notch - 5 star where we can .

Don't have massive savings but excellent pensions so believe in living for now.

LadyTemperance · 16/06/2023 21:17

6k which is about 10% of take home pay. I think the take home pay is relevant here. A family with a low income spending 1k could be quite a high percentage.

mobear · 16/06/2023 21:44

15-20%.

mobear · 16/06/2023 21:46

mobear · 16/06/2023 21:44

15-20%.

Should have said that’s my 1/2 against my salary. DP’s salary is much higher so a much lower percentage.

shivawn · 16/06/2023 21:50

15-20% of joint take-home pay. I want to lower it. Not by having less holidays though, just cheaper ones.
