how much to pay for holiday watering of garden

We are going away for a week and I have asked the neighbour's teenager to water our outside pots and vegetable plot. I have no clue what to offer as payment. There is an outside tap with a hose, we are waiting to see what the weather is going to be before working out how often they need to do it, but I would say it will take them about a half hour to do everything. Any suggestions? We are away for a week.

£25 and a nice box of chocolates to say thank you?

£5 per day of watering? How many days do you think he will need to do it?

Funf · 16/06/2023 13:23

£25 sounds about right and a small gift would be nice.
We put an automatic irrigation system in ours it was money well spent, cost about £100

I'd say £5 per day.
However, think about possible hosepipe bans. If s/he needs to use a watering can it will take longer & be quite heavy work.

thank you for your replies. Funf, what irrigation system did you get? Sounds interesting. I have an irrigation system for inside the conservatory and green house, but it can't be used outside.

for the system, they also have an Ebay shop, Timer was about £20 from Screw fix. Timer attaches to the outside tap, large pipe a bit smaller than a hose attaches to the timer, run around the garden Ours is buried and you add different sprinklers and droppers as required.
Buy the professional metal tool for connecting the sprinklers to the main pipe its much better. All our pots, baskets and boarders are watered by it

I think looking at the forecast weather (bit of rain most days) it will only be two or three days of watering, also we are in scotland and in 15 years of living here there has never been a hosepipe ban. I think £15 and a box of chocs is a good idea. Also that is what we pay for looking after the chickens, which they have done before so it fits with that. Chickens are arguably less work, let out, let in, top up food, but more reponsibility.

I’d wait and see if your plants are still alive when you get home ;)
