'Big' Holiday ideas while pregnant and with a 2 year old

We (me and my partner) are due our second child at the beginning of Dec so I am almost 16 weeks pregnant. Our LB has just turned 2 and we were thinking it would be great to do a 'big' holiday this summer before I am too big and whilst we only have one child's needs to consider. We are not beach or holiday resort people so not looking for a kids holiday but obviously we need it to be practical with a 2yo. He will be happy as long as he has space to run around and we give him lots of attention so it doesn't need to be a kid specific holiday.

We thought about India but going 'high end' (5 star hotels, no street food etc.) to lessen the chances of getting food poisoning (we've been before, pre baby and had more of an 'authentic' experience which was amazing but I couldn't do that again pregnant and with a kid in tow).

The other place I had thought is Japan but I am not supposed to eat raw fish so seems like a bad time to visit as I love sushi.

Anyone got any interesting ideas to throw in? We are not particularly on a budget so cost doesn't really matter.

TIA xx

I traveled when pregnant and it was horrendous, I was hot as it was in the UK, never mind 30+ In Africa. I couldn’t do the activities I wanted and I was just so tired it ended up a waste of money. I know not everyone is the same but India on a plane with a two year old sounds stressful never mind being pregnant too. Why not go so where a bit more local North Africa or Europe?

A cruise?

Dubai?

I went to Jamaica when I was pregnant and had a young DC, it really was one of my best holidays.

We went to the US when DS1 was that age and I was pregnant. From a toddler perspective Washington was great for the museums and zoo and New York for the parks, sirens and Times Square.

Re India does your child like spicy food, because if not food could be difficult for him. Also, where exactly would you go as summer is monsoon in some parts and ridiculously hot.

Re Japan, you can eat sushi so long as the fish used has been frozen ie sushi grade. Japanese women must surely eat sushi so I assume food standards are similar there?

We also went to China when we had two toddlers and I was pregnant again. They saw pandas and the surprise hit was the Terracotta Army. They loved Hong Kong. Food was difficult on the mainland as we had no idea what we were eating but they managed. Food on HK is amazing.

We did a cruise in this situation (one with lots of stops) so could do trips if we wanted but also had activities on board for all to enjoy. I couldn't of coped with anything too hot/full on 2nd pregnancy.

Thank you - I had thought about the US. Our LB likes spicy food and actually in our experience food in india is always 'spiced' but often not very spicy (if that makes sense). I have spoken to a Japanese woman who tells me that Japanese women (in Japan) do stop eating raw fish when pregnant although I didn't know you can eat it if it's been frozen so maybe there is an option to eat the local food if I am selective....🤔

I don't like fish that much. There's a lot more to Japanese food than sushi. I loved the food and avoided raw fish sushi easily.

It's just I love sushi and I daresay we won't be visiting Japan often so just seems like a bit of a shame to miss out and go when I can't eat it, although it looks like perhaps you can eat raw fish if it's been frozen so maybe not all is lost!

You don’t have to avoid all sushi when pregnant. You can eat raw fish (though only good quality) if it’s not mercury-laden fish eg swordfish though you should limit it to a couple of portions a week. Cooked sushi, including of prawns, crab etc is absolutely fine to eat. Likewise, shellfish is fine to eat as long as it’s cooked. Sashimi salmon is fine as long as it’s good quality. As for travelling, the US is actually a good option- flights aren’t horrendously long, it’s very kid friendly and provided you don’t go to Disney, you won’t feel like you’re missing out. It’s very well set up for people who are finding mobility a challenge

Sorry, I should also have said you can have sushi if it’s been frozen beforehand too
