Hi I need some helpful advice or tips, I really want to go to Italy (no where specific) end of September for 3 nights for my first wedding anniversary.
DH is useful and these things so it's all down to me, I've found great places in lake como and lake garda but these are so far from the airports

Has anyone done this recently on a budget and can tell me to e beat place to start lookimg should I book package or separate?

Venice is the easiest. Compact, easy from the airport, plenty to do whether you just want to watch the world go by, visit museums, eat and drink etc

If you can find a good easyjet or similar deal, and an air bnb it really needn’t cost much

Jet2 does holidays to Lake Garda with transfers. The airport is at Verona, it's not that far to do it yourself, pick a destination with a station and you're sorted.

Been to Rome recently and it's really not that expensive at all. Florence is fabulous if you can fly to Pisa from where you are. Lake Como is really not far from Milan Bergamo, you can do it via train easily - however I found it pretty boring tbh.

For a romantic city break, I’d get flights to Pisa (fairly cheap) and stay here:

We loved it, and would go back. A refurbished palazzo with lovely rooms, excellent staff and a city centre location for exploring.

Looks like Pisa has smartened itself up a little. I went 30 odd years ago and it was a bit of a dump. We flew to Pisa but got the train straight to Florence. Trains are regular and fairly cheap.

Depends what you want to do on the holiday? History or not?
The lakes really quiet down by end of September and the weather will be getting a lot cooler so it depends how you feel about that. The journey from Verona airport to lake Garda is a breeze though.

3 days is ideal for Rome. I went there recently on an EasyJet package it was all very easy.

CornishGem1975 · 15/06/2023 08:24

Lake Garda is easily accessible from Venice or Verona airport.

Florence is a great city break, but Verona is my favourite place. I always stay in B&Bs with Italian families in Italy, such a lovely experience. Some fantastic ones and the breakfasts are always amazing!

LittleMonks11 · 15/06/2023 08:33

It's got the be Rome! Compact, romantic, lots of culture, great food, warm in Sept, no school kids on hols, beautiful.

LittleMonks11 · 15/06/2023 08:34

I want to go back now - went with hubbie before married. It was amazing.

Neither lake Como (Milan) and lake Garda (Verona) are far from airports depending on resort. Less than an hour's transfer. Lake Maggiore is similar time from Milan. If you prefer a city break try Rome, Bologna, Venice or Florence.

I don’t think you need a package. Book easyjet or Ryanair to Verona (for Verona and Lake Garda) or same for Venice (Venice, Verona, Lake Garda). Lake Garda is close to Verona airport and the airport is small. Lots of lovely places in Verona and Venice.

I normally just book my hotels, transfers & flights separately myself & it tends to work out cheaper this way & I get exactly what I want.

What airport will you be flying from as this may determine which places are available to you?

Im not a massive fan of Rome, but it’s is good to see if you’ve never been. I much prefer Florence or Venice. Or you could fly into Naples & stay in Sorrento.

Last summer I went to Menaggio (across the water from Bellagio) in Lake Como & the travel to get to the hotel was just a pain!! It’s put me off ever going back to be honest, as beautiful as the place was.

I’m off to Menaggio in September, @Vanillalime, & I was planning to get a bus to Varenna & ferry from there. What route did you use?

Vanillalime · 17/06/2023 08:31

@EmpressaurusOfCats

I flew into Milan & got the train from the airport to Saronno & then onto Como. Walked to the boat terminal but the queue was huge, after queuing for over an hour & not able to get on the express boat as it was full (and not wishing to wait a further hour for the slow boat that would take 4 hours!!) decided to walk to the bus station and got the bus up the left hand side of the lake to Menaggio.

If you are coming in from Bergamo side, then the bus or train to Varenna makes more sense.

La Fabbrica on the main square does the best gelato. And I had a lovely meal in Il Vapore although it’s best to book and get the earliest sitting as they do run out of food!

I also did a trip to St Moritz on the Bernina Express train that was fun.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 17/06/2023 09:09

That’s all really useful to know, @Vanillalime. Grazie!

grayhairdontcare · 17/06/2023 09:23

Venice is perfect for 3 days.
Wondering about looking at the sights
Stopping for a cocktail.
Will be lovely

KnittedCardi · 17/06/2023 09:28

Bologna airport is literally in Bologna, scheduled BA and Easy Jet flights. If you like your food, that's the place to go. Student city too, so fairly vibrant, and not too touristy
