Taking a travel cot abroad

We’ve booked an apartment abroad for next year but when I’ve read the information it states there’s no capacity for cots at the property. I requested a travel cot but assume this means they won’t provide one.

DD will be 16 months when we travel. Has anyone ever checked a travel cot into the hold on a plane. Is it even feasible, most travel cots we’ve had have been pretty bulky! I’ve just never come across anywhere that won’t provide a cot so I’m a bit thrown.

Easyjet allow 2 baby items to be checked on for free. Car seat, Travel cot and pram/buggies are their suggestions on the website. Not sure about other airlines tho

I haven’t but when DD was about that age (even slightly older I think) we took a travel tent type thing abroad to stay with friends. That worked really well and was also easy to transport - so easy that I remember nothing about it!

It was something like this, we just popped it in a suitcase! Bought it secondhand and sold it on when we got back.

Not checked in a travel cot but just back from a trip where we checked in a car seat and it works in the same way. Most airline policies allow two check in items for infants so this could be a carseat and a travel cot: just mention it at check in (you will need to check in at the airport in my experience) and they will tag it up and ask you to bring it to oversized baggage. I wouldn't worry about the size. Do check the airlines policy though to be sure yours isn't different but even Ryanair allows two items

Little life travel cot is small and light enough to go in a suitcase and lasts to age 4. Get that.

We've got a little life twin arc. It set ups a bit like a tent. So easier to pack!

Most airlines let you check in baby items for free e.g travel cot, car seat and buggy/pram. Travelcots aren't that bulky folded up, maybe max 120cm long and 30cm high and weigh under 10kg. They get usually get taken to a special luggage area for fragile items. Many parents travel with above 3.

We had a little life travel cot. As we needed a buggy and car seat we took it on as handbaggage.

Phil & Teds have a great travel cot too. Got one from Marketplace and took it everywhere as carry on.

Another vote for the little life arc 2

We took the little life arc 2 abroad and on to many flights. It fitted in our large suitcase

BA allows 3 baby items (cot, car seat, buggy), we’ve taken our Baby Bjorn cot 3 times. It folds down neatly into smallish case & weighs 6kg.

Porridgeislife · 11/06/2023 07:16

Sorry to clarify it comes in its own case and we check it as a separate baby item.

We are abroad now with travel cot. Ours is a red kite and it folds up very compact. Only thing is the 'mattress' it comes with isn't really a mattress at all, just a base and we had to buy a separate mattress. As others say, most airlines let you check in two baby items for free and we put the mattress inside the bag with the car seat (you can buy bags specifically for travelling with car seat and if you buy a big one, travel cot mattress can go inside too), then the travel cot itself was the second item.
