Hello

We are going to Lake Garda early Aigust to a child friendly resort. Did a road trip to SW France last year which was excellent.

Hb thinks we should drive it fly for the environment. Fine. But now how do I plan a trip there and back which is pleasant ans reasonable?!

Lots of tips online for hammering it down the German autobahn. Probably wil do this en route, maybe visit Neuschwanstein Castle if feasible. Then vague idea to come back thru France via wine tasting areas for my own benefit. Else could go to agrotourism Italy / France.

Any ideas gratefully received. We have a decent budget as saved £2k or so by not flying.

We did the same holiday a few years ago, our children were 8 & 6.

We drove through France, Switzerland and on to Lake Garda with a stopover in the Alsace close to the Swiss border. Beautiful place.
Lots of lovely picnic areas / lakes to stop at in Switzerland to stretch your legs and let the kids have a play. On the way back we stayed on a lovely campsite in the Jura Mountains for a few nights which we all loved.

One of our favourite holidays. Have a wonderful time.

My dc are bit older but there are some great indoor water parks which often have cheaper twilight sessions in Germany / Switzerland. Just check out the swimwear/hat rules beforehand.

We did this trip last August. Stopped at La Croix du Vieux Pont Eurocamp North of Paris for 3 nights (day at Parc Asterix and a day staying on site) then one night at Colmar in Alsace which is a beautiful town. Then we drove through Switzerland to Lake Garda. On the way back we went via Turin into France then stayed at Annecy for 2 nights then Bourges in the centre of France for 1 night. Great town for a night time walk as there are routes lit up round the town with illuminations projected on to the historic buildings.

Head through the Black Forest in Germany if you can, it’s amazing. rodelbahns, sensory barefoot trails and free marble runs on family trails. Depending on which route you take through the Swiss alps, one of the routes has a glacier you can’t walk inside

I wouldn't have a clue about which route to take I'm afraid. But just to say, you seemed concerned about car hire prices if you went by train. We went to Lake Garda last year and the public transport was great, plus loads of things in walking distance. Didn't need a car at all.

We drive to LG with two little ones. Always stopped at Novotel as they have family rooms, cheap food and pool. Going down we stopped twice second one just outside Milan. Our mistake was to then put a tent up at the end. We were too tired and the kids just wanted to let off steam. Your trip sounds nicer if your have at least three weeks. We did fly a few times and never paid more than £150 each return.
