France self catering suggestions - near to a ferry terminal

Hi

We're thinking of going to France for a break, but have no idea where to look. Ideally we'd want something not too far from the ferry port so I guess Calais or Cherbrg.

Prefer something close to a beach, but with amenities nearby, e.g. shops, cafes etc.

Has anyone got any suggestions. I'm a bit reluctant to drive on the "wrong" side of the road, so I'd rather pick somewhere where we can just do local pottering, with 2 small children (3 and 1).

Thanks

Hello,
My parents bought a place in Barneville-Carteret (google it - sorry gotta go to bed !) on Cherbourg peninsula. It's 2 resorts (big word!) but my parents' place is in Carteret and you can walk everywhere. There are restaurants, a baker's and a small grocer's & some bars. The beach is absolutely beautifull and the whole place is v. child-friendly. We go there often with our 3 and 1 yr olds !

If you look on the tourist office website there is a link to accomodation, my parent's place is for rent on there too - it's not luxury accomodation and only has 1 bedroom (but 2 double beds & a mezzanine area with 2 singles too). It does have high-chair, bath, stairgate and travel cot & potty !

Have a look on owner's direct, there are 2 other places there too.
Let me know if you need any more info - it is 40 mins easy drive from Cherbourg - but you don't need to drive at all once you're there - you could walk everywhere (we do with pushchair & buggy board).
HTH?

Blimey HaventSlept we're going to B-C this summer, but not to yours from the sound of it
It does look lovely alwayssurfing - I was recommended it by another Mner
Nearer to Calais and Boulogne you have Wimereux and Hardelot, both lovely, sleepy resorts with fine Cote d'Opale sandy beaches
Wimereux has quite a bit of self-catering property in the town I think, but have never stayed there myself

this maybe?

not exactly on the sea, but quite close

Oh Marina - might see you there then! When are you going? You'll love it - there are great sandy beaches all along that coast and loads of places to go walking and cycling too. We just need to get fit enough to haul around 3 yr-old plus 1 yr old on bikes !

Towards the end of the summer hols. We've already been recommended those lovely cycle paths

Should be lucky with the weather then. AND the sea will have warmed up (I'm a bit of a wuss);
