Arriving late at night?

Can I ask some perhaps obvious questions about booking a holiday? I don't travel very often and a few things are worrying me!

  1. I'm planning to travel to Gdansk for a few days in February next year. The only flights from my local airport get in late - about midnight. Do you think a hotel would accept me checking in that late - say 1am at the earliest? To be on the safe side, should I just plan to stay in a hotel at/near the airport for that first night and then travel into the city in the morning?

  2. If I do travel into the city at night, does anyone know if I need to prebook a taxi or if I can just get one at the airport? Presumably there will be high demand as lots of people on the flight will be in the same situation.

  3. When I look up flights, it's around £200 return to book now. I tried looking at flights in September, and it's cheaper, and then at flights in 2 weeks' time, and it's cheaper still! I always thought it was better to book in advance. When is the best time to book? (Don't know if it's relevant but there are only 2 flights per week, on fixed days and times. Also, I am planning to go for Valentine's day, so don't know if that week is high season or anything because of that.)

  4. When should I book the hotel(s)? Especially if I am cutting it fine with booking the flights.

Thank you!

I often end up arriving in places late at night. Always stay in airport hotel and then head off next morning.

Which airline are you planning on flying with? If WizzAir or the likes, it is cheaper to book about 2/3 months prior.

Depending on a hotel, some may organise taxi for you to pick you up, or you can pre-book one. Having said that l never had issue getting a taxi at night from any airport (including Polish ones). You will also be able to order taxi using Bolt (like Uber more popular option).

You should be able to check in at 1am in the hotel without any issues. You can always message hotel and advise them you will be arriving late at night.

Hotel booking, depends which one you are after, however prices are relatively stable and remain the same per season, they won’t change from one week to the next. February is not a tourist season in Gdansk, you shouldn’t have any problems finding hotel even close to arrival time.

Re checking into the hotel late at night, you just need to check that the hotel has 24 hour reception. If it's a large hotel that's part of a big chain, it almost certainly will. A small family-run hotel might have more restrictive check-in hours.

Some hotels have automated check in so just a key code. Check the hotel details.
Taxi forms know the flight times! You should t have a problem.

  1. depends on the hotel, you need to check if there’s a 24 hour reception, or if they can accommodate check-in after midnight.
  2. I would say there should be taxis, but it’s quite a small airport so perhaps pre-book one for peace of mind.
  3. honestly go in September. You will freeze in February. I went in September last year and it was cooler than the UK but pleasant.
  4. book a hotel after you’ve booked your flights. If you think there’s a chance you could cancel the whole trip then choose the ‘free cancellation until X (usually a few days before you arrive)’ option, which is a bit more money but means that you don’t lose the whole amount if you need to cancel for whatever reason.

I returned earlier this week from a week in Gdansk flying Wizz air from Liverpool and landed at 1:45 after a delay.
Mostly stayed in AirBnB but spent the first night at the Focus Premium hotel closeish to the airport; I wanted definite twin beds and 24 hour reception. Checking in was fine at 02:30. Most upmarket and international brands will have reception open 24 hours.
Taxis were plentiful on the rank at arrivals, I used an uber as I hadn't got Zlotties and the ATM at the airport was only dispensing a stupidly high amount, I think a min 1000.

I never travel (😂) but a friend recently stayed at an airport hotel in Sweden arriving about 11ish. Fine to check in but no food available at all and nowhere that would deliver so pack some snacks!
