Segway tour of Alfama.
Cable car trip near Oriente station and a visit to the Oceanarium at the end.
Tram trip.
Lisbon zoo is lovely.
Pastel de nata at Belem (has to be done).

A train to Sintra to see the wonderful castles (but it is always heaving).
Go to Cascais to see how the expat rich live.

Cascais is very nice. About 40min on the train IIRC. Nice beaches, excellent restaurants in the centre. If it's a windy day go to Bocca do Inferno (easy 45min walk along the coast road, or taxi). But eat first or after. The tourist traps at Bocca do Inferno are dire.

There are two sorts of trams in Lisbon: the shiny modern trams and the rattletrap original trams. When they updated the tram system the new trams could not cope with the steep, narrow, old roads in the oldest part of Lisbon. So they kept some of the old trams. Tram 28 from Martim Moniz is a really atmospheric route.

Watching thread with interest, we’re off in September!

The Gulbenkian museum.

Belem - the Jeronimos monastery is stunning (as well as the tarts).
We liked the Modern art museum and the Gulbenkian.

We stayed in Cascais which we really liked. Loved Sintra, it’s crazy.

I'm from Cascais so it's heartwarming to see the love for my hometown!

I suggest other places in what we call "The Linha" (the coastal strip between Lisbon's city centre and Cascais).

Estoril is lovely.

In Lisbon itself, my favourite places are:

Principe Real - Beautiful architecture and gardens

Lapa - some of the most affluent locals live in this neighbourhood

Belém - Centro Cultural de Belém/Padrão dos Descobrimentos / Mosteiro dos Jerónimos and, of course, Pastéis de Belém (they're are absolutely NOT overrated, nothing compares. They will ruin you for any other examples of this pastry)

Bairro Alto - quaint, typical quarter, but full of hip clubs, bars, artsy type shops.

Alfama - as above, more touristy less alternative

Castelo de São Jorge - take the tram up, walk the rest of the very steep hill and you'll get the nicest view of Lisbon. Lots of lovely cocktails and perfect coffee.

Docas - the docks in Lisbon are jammed packed with amazing restaurant and bars. The food is lovely and the view is super.

Tróia - an island across the Tejo (Tagus) river. Loads of dolphins and beautiful water/beach

I was born and raised in Lisbon, but haven't lived there in a long time. It's a beautiful city.

Hope you enjoy it!

A rather mundane point, but wear comfy shoes ! Streets can be very steep.

My favourite city of all. So many good ideas and the people are just so welcoming, you can’t fail to have the best time, wherever you go. And do not miss Cascais! We’ve spent many a weekend in the most perfect fish restaurants there - O Pescador our local.
