Can anyone tell me about milk in France?

Hi all,

I'm going on holiday to Nice in France soon with my nearly 13 month old. We're in the process of switching from formula to cow's milk, currently about 50% of each for the morning and bedtime drinks.
Does anyone know whether I'll be able to find something similar to UK fresh full fat cow's milk? I remember from visiting other European countries that it's often UHT that's available and I'm not sure if the taste will be too different for him. What sort of brands should I look for on the shelves? Is it usual for supermarket milk to be pasteurised? Do they have a standard system like our blue tops for full fat milk?
Looks like our nearest supermarket will be Intermarche if that helps.
I speak very basic French!

Thanks very much.

You need Lait entier which means whole milk. You can get fresh milk much more easily in France now than you used to be able to and you won't have any trouble finding it in intermarche.

Have a lovely holiday Smile

Yes you can its 'lait frais' and iirc red top for full fat. Some of the smaller shops wont have it but you will be fine with Intermarche. years ago it was difficult but you shouldnt have a problem.

Don’t rely on colours as they can be different

Intermarché (near us at least) usually has fresh whole milk that looks like this.

As others have said the main supermarkets all stock fresh milk (if it's in the fridge it's fresh, the uht isn't refrigerated.). Smaller supermarkets and the likes of Aldi and Lidl don't.

Entière is full fat, demi-écrémé is semi-skimmed.

Or you could make your life easier and switch in some uht now so he gets used to the taste. It is useful as you can always have a pint in the cupboard.

While you do get fresh milk they often do the more "longer fresh" or whatever it's called. It's still pasteurised but at a slightly. higher temperature, gives them a longer use by date.

DD and DH do taste a significant difference. To a point where DD would point blank refuse to drink any of it. She was ok with it in porridge/cereals when we also added fruit.

She once went 2 weeks without milk, just eating lots of yoghurt instead but she was already not having morning/evening milk anymore.

Thanks all, lots of helpful info and especially for the photo!
Trying some UHT now also seems incredibly sensible, why didn't I think of that 😳@Frenchfancy
