Should I just stay in Malaga as a base and explore/do trips or stay somewhere else?

it’s me and ds(16), we are looking for a bit of wandering round, maybe a boat trip, beach/pool, good food etc.

aby suggestions would be appreciated

The train along the coast is very easy and then you can wander all along the sea front stopping in various beach clubs for drinks and nibbles. I think we got off at Torremolinos and then got on to to back to Malaga at Los Álamos.
We also did a fabulous Segway tour in Malaga itself.
The rooftop of the AC Marriott is lovely for a drink and to take in the view. We also enjoyed tapas at Kraken and dinner at Gusto.

If you take the train from Malaga to Benalmadena you will find it a nice walk down to the Marina through town but probably need a taxi back to the station as it is quite a walk back up the hill.
You can get a bus which travels on the coast road and nearer to the Marina.

We took our DC to Malaga last year for a week. We initially planned to do a day trip to one of the other cities in Andalucía but had enough to do in Malaga itself.

We had just one day at the beach, we went to Playa de el Palo which was very quiet and chilled when we went in Oct half term. Parque de Malaga was lovely as well (park not beach), we loved the parakeets.

Malaga has a lot of good art galleries and museums, we went to the Picasso Museum and the Pompidou. We also loved the Alcazaba and the Castillo de Gibralfaro. They are free to enter on Sundays.

Food wise we ate out in different places every day. El Pimpi was good, also Araboka and El Cabra.

Second all of these especially the cocktails at El Pimpi

Malaga is such a beautiful city. get the train from the airport to Malaga city (cheap, clean, reliable and fast)
The train going the other way will take you to Torremelinos and Fuegerola.
Malaga has loads to offer, I nearly missed out as it was just an airport stop en route to other places for so long. So glad I stopped and explored. Have been known to book a cheap flight and an IBIS hotel for a couple of nights and explore. The ports is cool and i have seen amazing yatchs and cruise ships there, lovely clean beaches. City centre is clean and full of little alleyways and lots of places for tapas and people watching and shopping. Check out the museums and the park and have a fabulous time!

Thanks, think I’ll just stick with Malaga then, as it sounds like there’s plenty to do to keep us occupied. I’ve been to Seville and Nerja before and loved both!

Might do a day trip to Cordoba or even Marbella to marvel at the super yachts and cars if we get chance

Good choice, I’ve been twice and still found new things to do.
The bullring area, just past the marina has lots of little restaurants that the locals go to, not so touristy.

I'm so jealous lol! I haven't been to Costa del Sol since before lockdown. TBF though I am going to another part of Spain next month, so I'm not totally hard done by!!

Last minute trip to Spain and have a couple of nights in Malaga. Any tips for somewhere to stay with 2 teen DS? Looking at air BnB but open to ideas !

This might appeal to some teenagers too: museoautomovilmalaga.com/ We walked there from the central of Malaga but there are buses too.

I loved that place and think it would appeal to everyone. A beautifully curated collection of art, fashion and classic/quirky cars.

My daughter stayed in a hotel, Barcelo I think, next to station Maria Zambrano, and it had a slide connecting the first floor to the ground floor, taking you straight into the cocktail bar. She loved it.

I have stayed here, brilliant slide and so close to the centre and the marina

If you're outdoorsy and a bit adventurous I also recommend the Caminito del Ray which is less than an hour away. Not as scary as it looks but amazing views and wildlife and something a bit different. You must book in advance in high season, as slots are restricted. And check the train times.

Malaga has a spanish music festival we hit it by pure chance it was fantastic streets full of people in traditional dress, loads going on

StillWantingADog · 14/07/2023 09:58

Malaga is great. Just try and find a hotel with a pool. Nearby beaches are good.

trying29 · 14/07/2023 10:03

I just did 3 days in Malaga last week. It was amazing and I could not get over how cheap it was! Looking to go back again soon. Beach was perfect.

DressDilemma · 14/07/2023 10:04

Malaga is a lovely and entertaining city. There are plenty of local attractions- museums, shops, specialty restaurants, tapas bars to keep you busy. However, if you are staying for 5 days, then I would recommend day trips to Mijas and Nerja. They are not too far and are totally worth the time and effort. You can come back by late afternoon and will still have the whole evening left to do other fun stuff.

DressDilemma · 14/07/2023 10:06

Forgot to add, Marbella is great too. You could do the Golden Mile walk and enjoy a meal in the fantastic restaurants while admiring the view of the yatchs.

kikisparks · 14/07/2023 13:19

I think we might go here with our toddler in September so interested in what people say, and for any recommendations for a hotel with a pool near the beach and anything toddler friendly to do.
