Where would you go for a trip of a lifetime?

We have a maximum budget of £16,000 to blow on a holiday that the kids (they will be 14 and 11 next summer) will love and gives them some kudos - they have only been abroad once before!
Any suggestions of where to go? I wondered about the Caribbean or the Seychelles. Or should we do something more active? I would love to go to Japan but they are fussy eaters!
My husband is quite a nervous traveller so anywhere that might be considered potentially dangerous is out!
We are not having a holiday this year so daydreaming about something awesome for next summer is keeping me going!!

Mauritius every time

We've been to Japan and it fulfils your criteria! It's one of THE safest places you can travel and so stunning plus exciting. Easy and quick to get around on the Shinkansen. Tokyo is amazing, Nara and Kyoto stunning, Hiroshima fascinating and moving and Miyajima is magical.

I don't think fussy eating should be used as an excuse. Plenty of countries would then presumably be ruled out and imho you can't live life like that! Encourage a sense of adventure, learn about Japanese cuisine beforehand, which is some if the most healthy and delicious in the world!

I am amazed how many are stating Florida. It's my idea of hell to go there.

We booked it as DD was desperate, but May half-term, not August. Then Covid hit and we haven't rebooked as DD's MH exploded and she is not able to cope with this kind of crowd on a regular basis. A day or so yes, but not for several days in a row.

And it was definitely for her, DH and I weren't hype for it at all.

About two holidays: With the prices currently so sky high, I find that even 2 weeks Europe are getting quite expensive and despite Europe being interesting I don't see any trip there as a trip of a lifetime, maybe because it is too close and will always be reachable.

A safari in Tanzania followed by a beach resort stay in Zanzibar

Muskovina · 08/06/2023 18:08

Have you thought about French Polynesia?
It's truly truly beautiful. Unspoilt if you go to the right islands, and definitely somewhere a little off the well trodden paths for holidaymakers.

It is a long way, about 22 hours from London. Flights are around £1,200 in economy each.

We went island hopping using the locals ferry service. If you avoid Bora Bora you can avoid most of the less desirable tourists.

My DM commented that it felt a lot like the Caribbean did when she first holidayed there in the 1960s.

Florida is very beautiful and an interesting place to go even if you avoid Disney. If they like Space, water parks, nature etc there’s so much to do. We did an amazing bike ride, traffic free, gorgeous plants, friendly little towns with farmers markets. I’m not into Disney at all but we went for one day and loved it - i expected crowds etc but it was fun

Chile and/or Argentina for great wildlife and glaciers
Norway for sheer natural beauty

I’d love to do a safari for one week followed by a week or two on a beach straight after! I’ve been lucky to be able to travel to some fabulous parts of the world but never managed a wildlife safari yet!

Haha I've literally just booked this for my husband's 40th. Kenya safari followed by a beach holiday on Zanzibar. I hope it's going to be as good as it sounds!

FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar · 08/06/2023 18:20

Also loved Myanmar. But hot and very humid so check your dates!

Georgyporky · 08/06/2023 18:20

Really depends on what you all like to do on holiday, & what your interests are.
I've been surprised at some of the suggestions - some are just beach holidays & you could be anywhere in the world.
£4k pp is not a huge amount when you add up transport, hotels, transfers, food etc.
China might be doable, but for something closer to home a safari could be good

Muskovina · 08/06/2023 18:25

I think 4k a head should get you to pretty much anywhere, you just cut your cloth to suit when there.

A joke surely? Trip of a lifetime??

I'd do a States roadtrip or better still travel through SE Asia, nicest people on the planet with food and scenery to die for. Bali, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia - just fantastic and you will all remember forever. Your money goes a long way there too.

Agree with se Asia.

i would say Galapagos is once in a lifetime or Second Japan and Canada for interesting adventures.

eurorailing could be fun too.

I am hugely lucky to have travelled all over the world, south America, south East Asia, China, Australia, Europe, North America and Africa. It's so personal ...Are your family into sites (egypt, Angkor whatt, bits of china, south and Central America) wildlife (Canada, Africa Namibia and Botswana would be too on my no expense spared list) landscapes (Canada, Australia, south and north america) experiences (Japan I would recommend, South Asia, india, also recommend) or a bit of everything? Bit of everything, well Canada's not a bad shout, Columbia (but might not suit the nervous) or a combo of Egypt and Tanzania.

This is a really good summary. It’s so varied. E.g. For me the Maldives would be low down a long list, I can dive but 2 weeks would drive me mad. I know that my top trips are too looky looky for most people

Zanzibar is awful! Don't go there OP, go to Mauritius after safari instead. I've done all three.

Mnemba island in Zanzibar is amazing. Pemba island is nice too, though not as amazing as Mnemba.

WhoInvitedHer · 08/06/2023 19:47

Australia every time

HermioneWeasley · 08/06/2023 19:59

Alaska

fly into Vancouver or Seattle and have a day or two there. Fly to anchorage and have a couple of days there. Take a cruise down the inside passage of Alaska to Vancouver and fly home or have a couple of days there/Vancouver island.

biarritz · 08/06/2023 20:08

If your husband is a nervous traveller I’d discount Africa. Driving around can be hair raising and I didn’t like creepy crawlies or worry of getting malaria etc! I would do a summer trip to Canada or Iceland and do a club med ski trip in the winter.

justasmalltownmum · 08/06/2023 20:16

Singapore, malaysia, Thailand

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 08/06/2023 20:29

Bali via Hong Kong, Singapore or dubai. or South America including Galápagos Islands

There’s more to Florida than Disney.

"I am amazed how many are stating Florida. It's my idea of hell to go there."

I haven't suggested florida but you're being a bit ott there. Hell? Why?

First, it's the heat in Summer. Far too much for me.

Secondly, lots of people just mentioned Disney/theme parks. I can't imagine spending time in a. theme park, spending time in queues and. eating overpriced park food. I know several people who did Disney in August and I couldn't imagine this as a great holiday for me.

While I know that there is plenty of other things to do, nothing is really what I would say is my idea of a holiday of a lifetime. For me there are other areas in the US I would like to discover.

Everyone has their own ideas and dreams. Maldives are also not on my list as I can't snorkle and are afraid of even thinking of diving. It would be a waste of time and money.

Road trip in Canada or New Zealand.
