Am I wrong to be annoyed by this?

DH and I have just come back from a UK holiday. The first one for 5 years. We booked a holiday lodge for 10 days.
During the booking the owner got the dates wrong. I clarified the correct dates and, as it was her error, she let us have the last day for free.
We were supposed to be coming home tomorrow.
Skip to last night and the owner came to us and said, did you have a nice stay? Safe journey home tomorrow.
I said, we're not due to check out until the day after tomorrow.
She looked completely flummoxed and said, that's awkward, I've got other guests checking in to your lodge in the morning.
I went back through my emails and showed her the dates.
She then implied, that had put her in a right fix and you didn't pay for the extra day anyway. Implying that we should leave a day early.
Basically, she made her problem our problem.
It was all very awkward and we eventually agreed we would go today, which we did.
We have been regulars at this place for the last 25 years but no more!!!!
The more I think about it the more angry I'm getting.
I suppose I should just get over it but it was the longest holiday we've ever booked and the first one for years.
I feel a bit cheated.
What do you think?

It’s a pain but mistakes happen.

Hadalifeonce · 07/06/2023 17:13

I would be really pissed off, what if you had flights booked for your return, where would you have stayed?
I am the type of person who would probably say the owner should find one night's accommodation for the new arrivals, but DH would talk me down.

sunlovingcriminal · 07/06/2023 17:14

I'd be pissed off.

sarahh96 · 07/06/2023 17:15

@Hadalifeonce that was my initial reaction too but she went to great pains to explain we were getting the last day free anyway (due to her initial mistake).

So did you get a night free?

Hoppinggreen · 07/06/2023 17:17

I think I wouldn’t have left until I was actually supposed to

Same. She made a mistake, basically double booked the lodge for a night, and turfing you out when you had proof you weren't due to leave wasn't the right way to solve it.

Thebigblueballoon · 07/06/2023 17:19

So she fucked up twice and had the audacity to put the onus on you?
Put all of your correspondence in an email and ask her for a refund for the last night. If she refuses, I’d point out just how loyal you have been and that your loyalty stopped after this holiday. And I’d leave a review detailing her crapness on the relevant sites. She essentially ruined the last day of your holiday.

Gymmum82 · 07/06/2023 17:21

I would have refused to leave. Made up some excuse as to why I couldn’t possibly. It’s her problem not yours. As it stands I’d leave negative reviews on every possible platform

volcanoroll · 07/06/2023 17:22

Put a rubbish review on her adverts

wistfullyfocused · 07/06/2023 17:24

I’d ask for a day refunded

CC4712 · 07/06/2023 17:25

I agree with writing a well worded letter/email to her- adding the 25yr loyalty and asking for either a refund of 1 night or if you wanted, a credit towards next years holiday as a minimum- for the distress and bloody annoyance her mistakes caused.

Depending on the reply- you then know where you stand. If no reply, or shit reply- review on other sites. You gave her a chance to redeem herself.

If you get a good response, free night's etc then I'd leave it

sarahh96 · 07/06/2023 17:47

The problem was our last night (which should have been tonight) was free. We had only paid up to yesterday. Although it was her idea to give us the free night it was snatched back because of her booking error.
She was strongly suggesting we didn't have a leg to stand on as it was with her goodwill that we were there at all for the final night.
I suspect, if we'd dug our heels in, she would have charged us extra under the pretext of having to find alternative accommodation for the next guests for one night.
I feel bad leaving a review as it's a little family business and she's recently lost her husband but......

None of that matters.
She can’t give you compensation for cocking up then take it away when she cocks up again.
I would have just very politely said “oh dear, I hope you manage to get something sorted” and walked off

Thebigblueballoon · 07/06/2023 19:45

It’s all there in black and white. She wouldn’t have had a leg to stand on if you’d refused to leave until your allotted time.
You did her a decent favour by checking out early as it would no doubt have costed her more to put them up in alternative accommodation for the night. And they would have been just as annoyed and inconvenienced as you were. You saved her double the grief. If she has any business sense she’d apologise and offer a night’s refund.

Itsanotherhreatday · 07/06/2023 19:48

25 years! You need a change of scenery!

sarahh96 · 07/06/2023 20:17

@Itsanotherhreatday 😂 you're not wrong there!

This. Get your refund and then post bad reviews everywhere.

cattygorically · 07/06/2023 20:23

No I'd also be annoyed OP. I can't believe you had to leave early!

transformandriseup · 07/06/2023 20:28

I would have been very annoyed.

rookiemere · 07/06/2023 20:32

As you have been there so many times and as she is recently widowed, I'd do her the courtesy of emailing her.

Tell her how disappointed you were to have your holiday cut short and how it means you're unlikely to revisit for a 26th time.

Maybe she's simply not up to running the business at this point in time and needs to face that fact. I'd like to think you would get an apology from her, but suspect it's unlikely.

TheGander · 07/06/2023 20:42

Given she’s lost her husband, maybe forget the bad reviews ( would be cathartic to write but you might regret it later). By all means send her an email explaining our disappointment and explaining you won’t be returning, might wake up call she needs.

MissAmbrosia · 07/06/2023 20:54

I would have refused to leave basically. Her problem.

FakingMemories · 08/06/2023 02:59

Well, you haven’t been that regular for the past 25 years because you also said it was your first holiday in 5 years.

weirdas · 08/06/2023 03:51

I would leave an honest review. If you have incurred any costs as a result of leaving early I would ask for them be refunded. But agree she's handed it badly. I wouldn't return
