Sunscreen for PLE (sun ‘allergy’)

Hi all
off on hols soon to sunny hot climes, but I have a tendency to break out in ‘hives’, PLE eruptions, which are so painful and unpleasant, and mean I have to stay out of the sun. Can anyone recommend a high factor spf sunscreen that helps with PLE, preferably mineral based? Face and body, if different. 🤞

La Roche Posay anthihelios is recommended by my son’s dermatologist as he suffers horribly with PLE… but… what has been transformative for us is the steroid creams prescribed to use in the lead up to a holiday and if he has a flare up. Made such a difference!

I hope you manage ok xx

I used to suffer with this, it's got better. This suncream worked a treat for me. It was the only one at the time (15 years ago, although different packaging!) that touched it. Now I use this and have no issues. I use the factor 30 one.

I have this and the only thing that’s worked for me is the piz buin allergy one

Not a mineral suncream, but I've had a lot of success with Eucerin products. I also take Fexofenadine every morning when it's sunny and/or I'm using suncream. I've tried mineral creams but found they still upset my skin.

I got on well with Ultrasun for a while but it's like my skin built up some kind of dislike to it, one year it just didn't tolerate it any more.

I've also tried the la roche posay anthelios face fluid and found that to be good.

Hope you find one that suits you OP 🙂

Green People mineral sunscreen is brilliant.

Ultrasun do a mineral range too

Hi, I suffer from this and now always, always take an antihistamine a few days before I go on holiday and throughout my break. I sometimes get the rash towards the end of the holiday but it’s not itchy and it goes away as soon as I get home. The brand of sun cream doesn’t make any difference to me.

I found Lancaster works best, the milk not the spray.

Thanks all, much appreciated. Lots of useful recommendations!

Another vote for the piz buin factor fifty for sensitive skin. My DD usually suffers terribly but 4 days into our holiday and all good.

Eucerin allergy spf 50 saved my skin after a horrid reaction in Croatia. The pharmacist advised it was the best for severe reactions. Best of luck

The altruist ! Brilliant product

whosaidtha · 04/06/2023 23:48

I just take an antihistamine. I get it even in the uk at the moment.

Coronationstation · 05/06/2023 09:37

I used Tropics last year and my skin was the best it's been. I take daily antihistamines for hayfever from March to October and my skin still breaks out with most products.

cocksstrideintheevening · 05/06/2023 09:40

I take antihistamine all through the summer which helps. I get on better with the dry sprays rather than creams and cannot tolerate Soltan at all. Ambre Solaire is the best for my skin.

I also always wear a full sleeve rash vest on the beach, I don't know what it is, perhaps more UB reflection from the sand? but the beach will guarantee a reaction.

The best one for my daughter has been Uvistat. It's the only one that doesn't create a secondary rash because of the cream.

We've spent a fortune going through the different suncreams trying to find one that's suitable. Fingers crossed they don't change the ingredients in Uvistat!

I suffer with this on my collar bones and wrists; it can be hell. It doesn’t even have to be very sunny to trigger it.

My GP said using a daily antihistamine in the run up to spring/summer (or a holiday) can help switch off the reaction full-stop. I’ve done this successfully a few years but others, a sunny day has hit early out of the blue and I’m triggered for the rest of the season.

Piz Buin allergy cream does the trick for me
