Naples - the Marmite City - I promised an update :)

So we just spend 3 nights there (after a gorgeous week on Ischia). I read so many tales that it was dirty and dangerous and was a bit trepidatious to be fair. We stayed at the Relais Castel Nuovo - opposite the cruise terminal/ferries to the islands which was very central. First day we did a walking tour of the historical centre which really helped to get our bearings. Second day we got train to Herculaneum. Definitely preferred Herculaneum to Pompeii. 3rd day we visited the Galleria Borbonica (underground ex water storage/bomb shelter etc) and wandered round the Spanish Quarter and Pignasecca market.

We started off being hyper vigilant about bags and phones etc but really we didn't find Naples any different to any other big city - we at no point felt unsafe - apart from the odd occasion of crossing the road! You have to be quite forceful if there are no crossing lights. It certainly wasn't dirty - yes there are bins in the residential areas awaiting collection, and some graffiti. Restaurants were really nice and generally filled with locals. Yesterday was a BH and the whole city was out, queuing for pizza and eating ice cream. It's extremely vibrant and a town made for locals rather than tourists maybe. Architecture and history is amazing. My best description would be Barcelona on steroids - though many MNetters also hate Barcelona....

The atmosphere in the Spanish Quarter with all the football stuff on show (they just won the league) was incredible. DH is not a fan of Maradona though and he is much in evidence :) We still only barely scratched the surface in 3 days as it was hot walking about and spent a lot of time drinking aperol spritz on shady terraces. It is LOUD though and busy - though food and drink and atmosphere amazing. Everyone is out for a passeggiata in the early evening - so if you don't like crowds it's not for you. I will go back. I still want to visit the Archeological Museum and lots of other stuff we didn't have time for.

It's a wonderful place

Frenchfancy · 03/06/2023 20:51

I love Naples. You definitely have to go back to visit the museum.

TedMullins · 03/06/2023 20:53

Same as you I really enjoyed it. Side note but why does anyone here hate Barcelona?!

MissAmbrosia · 03/06/2023 20:58

It's a mystery to me how anyone can hate Barcelona!

I think it’s because there are far better cities in Spain. So it’s not that I hate Barcelona, it’s just overrated!

Better (IMO) cities in Spain: San Sebastián, Madrid, Seville, Palma, Granada… and a few more before I get to Barcelona :)

Thanks for the update on Naples, OP. It doesn’t appeal at all (😅) but Ischia looks great so I’ll be adding that to the Italy list!

AgathaSpencerGregson · 03/06/2023 21:17

This sounds and looks brilliant. Always wanted to visit Naples. Thanks!

wowie69 · 03/06/2023 21:22

Wonder if the rat lady of Naples is still there? She used to lie on top of a monument just outside the cruise terminal playing cards with herself, rats crawling all over her 😳

There are other lovely cities in Spain but that doesn't mean Barcelona is overrated imho. Ischia is lovely but I never went in August for example when it's probably heaving. May is lovely - season not fully started - great food, lovely towns to visit. We were offered free sunbeds for the afternoon if we had lunch at the beach. Did a boat trip to Procida which is also gorgeous. Had a long discussion with DH about whether or not to go to Capri (again). It is meant to absolutely beautiful but rammed with people which puts us off.

Didn't spot her! Lots of people selling hats and sunglasses - would have noticed rats I think 😱

Because they go for 2/3 days and never leave the 1 street (bar a bus to the beach) so don't actually see Barcelona.

So1invictus · 04/06/2023 07:04

Thanks for the update @MissAmbrosia (I'm the MNer in Puglia who defends Naples 🤣)

(If I remember correctly I've also booked a hotel in Seefeld on your recommendation for this summer! Apols if it's not you, but I think it may be!)

I don't dislike Barcelona, (in general I'm a Spainaholic and have loved every Spanish city I've ever been to with the possible exception of Oviedo but that was au-pairing) but I do prefer the middle. I'd always choose Madrid over Barcelona.

I’ve been 4 times and explored all over, it really is not as great as other Spanish cities. Part of the reason is the number and type of tourists, because there’s a widespread belief that it’s THE Spanish city to visit, hence my point above that it’s really overrated. 😊

maranella · 04/06/2023 08:35

I like Naples too! It's gritty and authentic, the food is fabulous, there's masses to see and do and as long as you're sensible and leave your valuables at home it's a great place to visit. I think a lot of people want a sanitised place to go on holiday, which explains AI resorts that you never have to leave, but if you love to explore and see somewhere that's probably very different to where you live, Naples is great. The Archaeological Museum is fabulous, so you definitely want to go back and visit it @MissAmbrosia.

Thanks for this thread OP. I am taking my three teens to Naples and Ischia this summer and it’s my first trip as a single parent. Your pictures look amazing and the tips are really helpful. I can’t wait 🍕 🍋 ☀️ 🌊

On Ischia you must visit the Castello for the stunning views and the nuns "graveyard" - and a boat trip to Procida. The Poseidon spa is a nice day out. A weekly bus ticket was about 14 euros for an adult.

wow!! Ive despised Naples, from the three times I’ve been or through there. I have a sensitive nose, and I just find it stinks sooo bad.

it’s the only place on the planet i feel this about. Plenty of places that are meh, or a bit stinky, but actual despise, only 1, Naples. except I did have the best pizza I’ve ever had in the whole of Italy, in the damn airport lol.

So it must have been me….. so, i will pop it back on the revist list and give it another chance. Thank you.

We had a night in Naples before heading to Ishia 10 years ago. I love Italy and have visited many times. I was not a fan of Naples though. It is the only place we have been pickpockted in and hassled while waiting for buses and trams.
