Two of us are going to Milan for a holiday soon. Intend to stay for just 2-3 days. Wanted to ask what are the good areas to stay / hotels wrt the proximity to the touristy places and close to stations etc. also safe for two women as we may come back late night. Any suggestions will be most welcome.

I stayed in Milan on my own a couple of years ago and I felt safe (although I wasn’t out particularly late and I was used to living in London).
I found that it was quite a nice city to walk around and if you’re near a metro it’s easy to get around (iirc you can get a pass for 3 days).

If you want to be central then I’d recommend staying near the Duamo (although it’ll be expensive). There’s a metro station nearby and lots of the hop on/off city buses that take you to all the tourist places.
Maio restaurant was great for breakfast and had lovely views of the Duamo (I imagine it would be good for cocktails later in the day too).

Duomo - Via Dante - Piazza Cordusio area is good. Basically look at the section of metro line 1 which runs from Cadorna to Duomo. Lots of shops, restaurants and people. The Antica Locanda dei Mercanti is a great place to stay, in a quiet street just off this area.

In that area, you're also close to Brera which is really nice and vibrant with lots of eateries.

The canal side Navigli district is buzzing. It’s not central but it’s a great place to stay. The Prada Foundation has great modern art and the best coffee shop. The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele is great and it’s just by the Duomo. Also see Castello Sforezesco, Sant’Ambrogio, Saint Maurizio and monestery (a must see for its wall paintings) and of course the shops. Plus The Last Supper if you can get in.

Depends on your budget but I'd go with the Navigli area too, easy to get around from there as you've got Porta Genova metro station, which is on the green line so good for getting to the main train stations. In that area are plenty of places to eat & drink, there is also a flea market on Saturday morning and art work on the last Sunday of the month. You can easily get the Duomo are from there. Stay away from the Central Station area late at night, however in the daytime if you're in the area it has got a wonderful indoor street food market on the bottom floor of the station(open every day 7am-midnight) and worth a visit.
