Normandy beach recommendations

Tree543 · 29/05/2023 11:01

We have a week booked in Normandy this summer and have started researching what to see. Does anyone have any recommendations of what the best DDay museums and sights are? There seems to be a lot of them. We have 3 teen boys and they would be interested in the history but I don't want to drag them around all of them.
Thanks

Utah Beach museum
Saint Mere Eglise Museum
Wander around pointe du hoc cliff tops

Saint Mere Eglise museum definitely
The museum (of War I think it includes the cold War and has English audio guides) in Caen is good too.

We stayed in a lovely town called Luc sur Mer which has peacocks living in the town park (who walk around town too) and a whale skeleton.

We loved our Normandy trip and did Mont St Michel one day too.

Following for ideas as we have a week in Bayeux in July.

We had the most amazing week in Normandy last year would thoroughly recommend. We stayed at a camp site in Luc sur Mer as well. It was only about 20 minutes drive from the ferry port and really handy to drive to all the different beaches. We did a different one every day and we also did Pegasus Bridge. We tended to do a museum and then explore the beach in the morning and then go back and play at the campsite site in the afternoon to balance things out.

If you want a recommendation I would probably go to Aramanches because it was the English Gold beach and a big success. It was fascinating to learn at the museum that Churchill came up with the idea to create a floating harbour, made in secret in the UK and and they floated it across the channel in the dead of night because they knew they need a harbour if they were to defeat the nazis and the nazis had all the actual harbours heavily defended. So it was a positive, something to be proud of. You can still see some of it out in the bay.

Bayeux War museum is a must, along with the tapestry of course. Charming town anyway.

Arromanches les Bains, where you can see the mega concrete structures associated with the Mulberry harbours. There is a museum of ww2 there also.

A visit to one of the many war grave cemeteries is also a must, very moving no matter which one you decide to visit.

All the beaches, Juno, Sword etc.

And if you have time a stop in Caen is well worthwhile. I also went to Lisieux and although I am not a religious person I went to see the incorrupt remains of St Theresa in the convent there. Strangely weird for sure, but interesting too.

I stayed in Bayeux and moved around, and took the train from Caen to Paris for the day. Early start and late return, well worth it since I had an idea of what I could realistically see in the time I had.

Normandy is great, hope you enjoy it.

Definitely

Saint Mere Eglise Museum

Piffpaffpoff · 29/05/2023 22:44

@MinxieMax i floated the idea of a day trip to Paris but no-one else wants to do it ☹️

@Tree543 we are just back from our trip so here is what I’d recommend and what I’d avoid, based on our experience.

Absolutely do go to Point Du Hoc, the US cemetery which has a superb free museum (DH reckoned it was the best of the bunch), the Overlord museum near the US cemetery and Omaha beach. The airborne museum at St Mere Eglise was also excellent, a real immersive experience and very well done. The newish UK memorial above gold beach was a lovely spot too.

Consider going to the Bayeux tapestry and get a combined ticket with the ww2 museum. Tapestry is a little underwhelming but still good to see and the war museum had lots to see. Bayeux is lovely compact town for a wander round and there’s a big market on Saturday morning.

Dont bother with the new beachfront museum at Arromanches, it was so busy and has a very poor layout so we felt we didn’t see much or be able to read the blurb about the items. They had nothing dramatically different to anywhere else so if you were going to skip one, this would be the one I recommend. Arromanches itself is worth a visit though, it’s a lovely wee village and there’s a beautiful memorial up on the cliffs to the east of the town and a great view out over the mulberry harbour remains.

We didn’t go to the Normandy Victory Museum at Carentan and in hindsight I wish we had as their website suggests it’s coming from a more French perspective, which would have been good to see.

We had a great time overall, good food, nice weather, lots to do. Enjoy!

Tree543 · 19/07/2023 08:07

@Piffpaffpoff
Thanks for that. We are going in a weeks time so I have been doing a load of research and glad to see that my list agrees with yours.
We are planning a day in Bayeaux to see tapestry/museum/cathedral and town and will get the combined ticket.
There are quite a lot of museums at Omaha but I had narrowed it down to Overlord and the free one. So am pleased you thought they were the best.
We are staying close to Arromaches so we will be going there but I had ruled out the new museum mainly because it is on the pricier side!
We will do a couple of beach days as well, which were the nicest beaches?

@Tree543 we didn’t do much beach time here as we went over to Portbail Sur Mer on the west side of the Cotentin peninsula for a few beach days after a week near Bayeux. Omaha beach was lovely but it just felt a bit weird being there having heard all the DDay tales. We didn’t go further east than Arromanches so maybe beaches east of there will more ‘beachy’ IYSWIM? We had a nice lunch and wander in Grandcamp-Maisy (after a trip to the Isigny-sur-Mer caramel factory - recommended!) and it had a small but nice sandy beach with lots of people in swimming and paddling.

Have a great time!

TattiePants · 19/07/2023 14:20

The beach at Utah Beach is lovely and we spent a couple of days there plus visited the D Day museum there. The 360 degree cinema at Arromanches is worth a visit.

The American cemetery at Coleville Sur Mer is in a beautiful setting on the cliff tops and very atmospheric. It also worth visiting the German cemetery at La Cambe which is very understated.

Thought I would update after our week in Normandy in August. The weather was awful, sailed back during storm Antoni which was fun.

Despite the weather we had a great time.
We loved Bayeaux town went there several times. The cathedral and the tapestry were both well worth a visit.
The best museums were the St Mere Eglise and the Pegasus Bridge ones both really well done.
We also went to the Overlord museum, Battle of Normandy Museum and the one at the American cemetery. They were all ok but I preferred the other two. The American cemetery was very moving as was the British memorial. We were planning to go to Utah beach, Pont du hoc and the Merville battery but the weather was too windy and fields too waterlogged so couldn't.

I would also recommend the Bayeaux Adventure Park which has a go -ape style tree parkour and loads of other activities.

Ah I just came on to post about Pegasus Bridge - it was a part of the actions I didn't know much about previously. i really liked Bayeux too. Glad you had a lovely time.

Heading to Normandy for 10 days next month so glad I found this thread!

First trip to the region having only ever whizzed through it on the way south.

Still trawling Air B&B for a week booking. Will need a night either side at a hotel. Thinking first night in Le Touquet as our shuttle gets in about 7pm.

Any other recommendations much welcome.

Day at Mont St Michel

Day in Bayeaux

Beach days

History, DD day and memorials

BeaRF75 · 19/06/2024 16:57

Bayeux is fab, a proper town and not just for tourists. And don't skip the tapestry - itvreally exceeded all my expectations.
If you have time, go further up the coast to Trouville which is also fun.

Thank you.

Yes we are heading down from Calais. I'd like to visit Honfleur for sure and Deauville.

I can't decide whether to split the accommodation into two locations - between DDay area and beach area.

Otherwise it's a lot of long day trips from one central area. Especially the Mont St Michel day.

It's August we go, not next month so still a bit of planning time. Finally booked the train yesterday!
