Me, DH and 2 friends, all late 50s, are going to Dublin in Oct. DH and I have been before, but that doesn't matter.

We can also hire a car.

I imagine we'll do Trinity/Kells; Museum, Guinness. And a day trip Glendalough and one to maybe Newgrange?

What else might you do?

Kilmainham Jail and IMMA maybe?

or Powerscourt House and Waterfall might be nice. Not as far as Glendalough and close to Enniskerry which is a nice village.

Killmainum prison and complete opposite the National Leprichorn museum

My top tip is a restaurant called Krewe on Capel Street with amazing Beignets. You have to book a table a few weeks in advance.
Also the Little Museum of Dublin do walking tours in the mornings or there is an evening pub crawl/literary tour which is fun & interesting.

I've recently got back and preferred the Jameson tour to the Guinness - I don't drink either though!
Dublin castle.
Croke Park if you're interested in sports. Botanical gardens and Glasnevin.
Something different - Irish film institute.
Cathedrals are beautiful.
Would definitely go back!

Kilmainham gaol is an absolute must see. It's one of the best places I've visited and gave me a reality check and a new perspective on 'the troubles'.

foreverbasil · 29/05/2023 22:44

14 Henrietta Street and get out to Howth on the DART for a walk along the cliffs

BearsBeetsBattlestarGalatica · 29/05/2023 22:50

Cliff walk
Casino in Marino
Howth
City centre is a kip these days, keep your wits about you, get in and out to the places you want to to go, I wouldn't be hanging around

SarahDippity · 29/05/2023 22:51

Don’t hire a car if you are staying in the city centre, or at least not for the full duration. You will pay city centre parking prices and it is much easier to walk/take public transport. The national (ie state) museums and galleries are free. Trinity Walking Tours are excellent. You could start in the National Museum on Kildare St, walk over to Trinity for a tour, then up to Dublin Castle and the Chester Beatty. Next day, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, Guinness, and Kilmainham Gaol (I advise prebooking.) All the above are within 2 miles, on the southside of the Liffey.

You can do a day excursion by coach to Glendalough, easier than driving, and scenic.

try to eat in independent restaurants and coffee shops!

SarahDippity · 29/05/2023 22:53

If you like gardens, the Botanics is free, and is beside Glasnevin Cemetery museum, which in turn is beside one of Dublin’s landmark pubs, The Gravediggers.

Talapia · 29/05/2023 22:55

I'd second Krewe as a good place to eat

Bubblesdublin · 29/05/2023 23:20

Where will you be staying in dunlin.

Phoenix park is worth a visit, howth, guiness, grafton street.

Depends on your interests really. I visit Dublin several times a year for work & these are some of thr things I've enjoyed"

Visit the crypt of St Michan's where Bram Stoker is buried. It's a v interesting tour

Have coffee & a cherry bun in Bewley's on Grafton St & see the beautiful Harry Clarke stained glass windows

Visit IMMA & enjoy the grounds

Visit the Tenament Museum 14 Henrietta St - A faded grandeur Georgian St

Visit the RHA gallery & enjoy a glass of wine in The Ely Wine Bar in beautiful Ely Place

Kilmainham Gaol - v interesting

GPO museum - v good on 1916 Rising

EPIC Museum on Emigration

Have a wander in St Stephen's Green

The Litttle Museum of Dublin

Do a literary pub crawl

Visit the James Joyce Centre & do a Walking tour of Joyce's Dublin

Trinity College / Book of Kells & Douglas Hyde Gallery

Have a cocktail in the tiny upstairs cocktail bar at Peruke & Periwig (book a table)

Visit Christchurch & then have traditional fish & chips from Dublin's oldest chipper Leo Burdocks around the corner

Dublin Castle & The Chester Beatty Musuem there

Catch a performance at The Olympia / The Gaiety / The Gate / The Abbey / The National.Concert Hall

Visit The National Museum / The National Gallery

I was in Dublin last month & the city centre was no worse than most other cities. I travel a lot with work. On this occasion I walked down O'Connell St in the morning & it was busy. Lots of people about. I was on Capel St & Grafton Street too. No problems at all.

If you like beer/alcohol etc, the row & co experience was brilliant. There's a tour, cocktail making and drinks etc. It's up near the Guinness Storehouse and the Guinness open gate brewery is great too where you can try a flight or beers that are limited to small production, was brilliant

Gcsunnyside23 · 30/05/2023 00:32

Glasnevin cemetery and museum was brilliant too alongside loads of the other great suggestions that's the only other one I can think of. Try Bowes bar, off from temple bar area for a much much better pint of Guinness and much cheaper

BTMadmummy · 30/05/2023 01:28

Librarystreet.ie for dinner. It's fantastic

Fordian · 30/05/2023 13:46

Thanks!

I love Dublin. I also second a Jameson distillery tour, smaller in scale than Guiness, but very interesting.
There's a photographer's gallery in Temple bar, free to visit.
