Top tips for Malta please?
What should we visit?

I actually really enjoyed the Popeye village! Seriously wasn't expecting to, as I have zero fondness for Popeye, so maybe it's partly because my expectations were low, but it was a very pleasant couple of hours. It's a nice little bay with lovely views.

Boat cruise to blue lagoon - great snorkeling and swimming

Harebrain · 28/05/2023 17:11

Mdina. Go by bus in the late afternoon/early evening. It’s beautiful. Also, Valletta at night is lovely.

Georgyporky · 28/05/2023 17:44

The Hypogeum is fascinating, but perhaps not for everyone.
The bus service was cheap & good when we were there a few years ago.

Whammyyammy · 28/05/2023 18:17

Another vote for Mdina, if in Malra its a must. The hop in hop off buses are fab way to gey there too

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 28/05/2023 18:28

Shameless placemaking; we're off there in early July.

ThreeB · 28/05/2023 18:44

Take the ferry over to Gozo for the day and get the "hop on, hop off" bus tour of the island.

Isseywith3witchycats · 28/05/2023 19:02

Agree with Mdina its a very interesting walled town and the glass is to die for, Valletta is fab for walking round take the bus easy to use and cheap, the plane museum is a cheap interesting afternoon out the bus goes there too, didnt go to Gozo sadly as we went late and the weather wasnt good enough to go over there

Bababababab · 28/05/2023 19:36

Do you have kids? How old? Esplora the science museum is really good but a bit of a trek if you don't have a cat. If in Valletta go to the upper barrakka at noon and see them do the noon gun (cannon). Mdina is really nice. Go to one of the temples (hagar qim, ggantija), go to gozo on the ferry

Deadringer · 28/05/2023 19:53

Following this with interest, we are heading to Malta in a couple of weeks.

We're not taking the cats... 🤣

No kids with us

Get the ferry to Gozo and scuba or snorkle off the sicken boats.

Mammajay · 28/05/2023 22:09

Blue Lagoon was awful on bank holiday. Medina lovely.

dreamingofsun · 29/05/2023 09:36

valleta. the main church you need to get to early and even then there were queues. I also visited the smaller churches in valleta as we were staying near there. the other thing we enjoyed was the boat trip around the harbour.

BarbaraofSeville · 30/05/2023 10:27

Where are you staying? Be aware that the buses take ages to get anywhere.

Therefore I'd plan any trips carefully to avoid spending hours on the bus.

Agree that the Blue Lagoon gets very overcrowded and was too full of people taking selfies for the gram.

BarbaraofSeville · 30/05/2023 10:30

You can get a day trip to Sicily, although I'd check as Mt Etna is currently erupting, so might not be a good idea atm. They take you to see Mt Etna and some other interesting sights then leave you in a nice coastal town for a few hours so you can have lunch, go to the beach etc, before returning on the ferry.

We would have done it last time we went as the weather wasn't great but it was during covid times and going to Italy would have needed a whole new set of covid forms, passes, tests etc and caused further complications when we got home so a non starter unfortunately.

St Johns C- Cathedral, Valetta, the Blue Lagoon etc - all fabulous....go with a guide or do your own research to understand the history of the Knights, the Grandmasters, how they lived etc etc....and definately find a fishing village for lunch, its a great holiday!

Topseyt123 · 30/05/2023 10:55

Medina was lovely. It's a tiny walled city on the edge of Rabat.

Valletta is nice. Lovely architecture and good food and shopping.

Take a trip to Gozo on the Gozo ferry and do a tour of the island.

The buses are plentiful and cheap to use. We certainly didn't find them taking overly long.

BAD typing!

*St Johns Co-Cathedral....and I think its the Blue Grotto, not the Blue Lagoon.... Mdina is also just magical. You can do a films tour as well where they take you to the film sets and locations of Game of Thrones, Troy, Gladiator etc which is a lot of fun.
