Do I have to change my name on my passport?

Im pretty sure I should have changed my name on my passport when I got married 18mths ago. However I have booked holidays in my maiden name as I didnt want to pay the £72 charge when I still had 8yrs left.

I now need to apply for my sons passport and need to give details of my passport. I dont want to lie on the form and put my maiden name and say im not married when I am. If I put my married details will I get into trouble for not changing my passport?

You don't have to change your passport, as long as the tickets and passport match, it's ok.

popsycal · 19/02/2008 19:08

i have been married 5 years and it is still in my madien name.....you just need to travel under the same name though

LIZS · 19/02/2008 19:09

Don't think it costs £72 just to change the name.

MaeWest · 19/02/2008 19:15

Well, I just filled in a form for DS's passport, ticked that I am married, but DH & I have different surnames (he didn't change his when we got married ).

As others ahve said, as long as other travel docs are in your maiden name, shouldn't be a prob...

littledetails · 19/02/2008 19:16

I didnt think I had to, but when I fill in my sons it asks my name, passport number and the date I got married and these details wont match with my passport details and Im worried I'll get into trouble...and it is £72 which is scandalous.

you don't have to change your name
on the form put your name as it says in your passport and put that you are married

littledetails - I have the same problem. Phoned up passport office in the end and was told to send my marriage certificate and explain in the "any other information" bit what/why etc. It was fine.

As far as you travelling, just remember to book in your maiden name!

HTH

Put your name as it says on your passport. You aren't lying or saying you aren't married, you're saying that that's the name on your passport, which it is. When you come to renew your passport you can change the name if you want.

poshwellies · 20/02/2008 11:37

Mine is still in maiden name after 7yrs ooops-I contacted the PO and yes,its ok to keep the passport in your maiden name as long as your tickets etc correspond with your passport details.....£72 is ridiculous!!!

chrissnow · 20/02/2008 11:44

Fantastic!! I've been putting off hols as we can't afford to go on holiday and change my passport!! Hoorah!

littledetails: if you don't intend to change your passport for a few years and have a different surname to your son, you might like to enquire about having a note inserted into his passport to the effect that you are his mother.

I say this because my DD has a different surname from me and whenever we travel alone together (which is quite often) I always get the third degree at passport control about whether she is really my child and why she has a different name. The explanation that she has her father's name has generally been accepted, although often only after some to-ing and fro-ing (and I now carry a copy of her birth certificate with me to be on the safe side). The worst occurrence was in Turkey, where they refused to believe me until my husband, who had gone ahead but was thankfully travelling with us, returned to passport control to re-present his documents so they could check my story.

Sorry to hijack
TheRedQueen - where did you get your name from? Is it a reference to a book?

TheRedQueen · 20/02/2008 22:48

Popsycal - As you perhaps know, The Red Queen is a character in Lewis Carroll's "Through the Looking Glass" who lives in a world where she has to run as fast as she can simply to stand still (and very much faster than she possibly can if she wants to get ahead).

I chose the name because I was diagnosed with unexplained infertility some years ago and, following years of invasive treatment, realised that the idea behind her (i.e. one of doing your absolute utmost and getting absolutely no-where) sort of summed up how I felt.

I seem to remember that the name has also been used as the title for a book about so-called evolutionary "arms races".

popsycal · 21/02/2008 15:09

awh sorry red queen - didnt mean to pry. I asked as it is the title of a book, perhaps the one you mention at the bottom of your post, which made a big impact on me at uni...
