Inter railing with kids

DH has suggested going inter railing next August with the DCs, who will be 12 and 10 at the time (so just missing out on 1 free child.place, should have thought of it sooner!)
I'm keen, but don't know what we'd be letting ourselves in for. Has anyone done this? Looking at 2 weeks, but not sure what a realistic itinerary would be.

Look at flying to Luxembourg. Cheap as chips and free public transport. Then plan from there with day trips and longer journeys

And look up interailing for elderly on Facebook for tips too, you don’t have to be old to join and it is very useful for accommodation and train advice

Interailing for the older crowd

We did three weeks a few years ago - took in Paris, the Pyrenees (though there was a rail replacement bus there), Barcelona, Madrid, Lisbon, home by ferry from Santander. It was great. Stayed for a few days in some places, a full week in others). Booked everything in advance (sleeper trains easier to book via the interrail booking service, though there’s a supplement to pay for them booking).

What I’d do differently another time would be to make sure I was getting off sleeper services later in the morning (post 8am) because then I’d sleep better!
