Snowdonia in August

The DC (6 & 9) have decided they fancy seeing Wales and, as I'm fond of mountain scenery, I impulse booked a cottage in the Snowdonia national park. What is that part of the country like for weather in August?.(Wet?) What are the best walks and activities to do with DC? Best motorway services to stop in on the way from the North London area?

Thanks very much :)

Like most of the UK, it is difficult to predict 3 months in advance.
I've had some beautiful weather in N Wales in August, I've also dry but a bit cooler (idea for walking) , I've also have shower, drizzly days, I've also had heavy rain.

There are so many walks you can do - it will depend a bit on your experience and skill level.
There are also many gorgeous beaches and several excellent castles to visit.

We went in August with slightly older children. It is lovely but VERY busy. Make sure you book activities and restaurants well in advance. Weather can be changeable. I would recommend the fforest coaster & bouncing nets etc. Lots of castles. They don't have big supermarkets nearby so bring any niche products with you.

Greenwood Forest Park was a winner with the whole family.
King Arthur’s Labyrinth and Corris Mine Explorers
Snowdon Mountain Railway
Llechwedd Slate Caverns (although when you first enter the cavern it is very dark and my youngest found this a bit scary at first).
Ffestiniog Railway - we did this on a rainy day and the dc loved the steam trains.

It depends which way you come and where you are staying as to service stations. The M1 has plenty. If you go into Wales via the M54 and A5 then there is not much choice. The M54 has a service station, but after that it’s McDonalds. The roads will be very busy. Pre book everything, especially Snowdon Mountain Railway. Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland railways are great and the WHR finishes at Caernarfon near the castle.. So many walks, just get a good guide book, but parking is a real problem and there is a real crackdown on illegal parking with walkers. Places like Betws-y-Coed are jam packed with walkers. Bring food with you as you will be limited with food shops. You could stop off at Welshpool or Oswestry depending which where you are staying, both have supermarkets. Weather is like anywhere, variable. Be prepared for all weathers.
