Driving to Denmark

Has anyone ever driven to Denmark? Thinking about doing just that later this year and would be grateful for any suggestions of routes that have good stop over points.
Thank you

Whereabouts in the country are you? We live in North East England and did this a few years ago. We got the overnight ferry from North Shields to Amsterdam, drove to Hamburg for an overnight stop then on to Denmark (Funen) the next day including a short ferry crossing. It was very manageable.

From the north of england on the ferry to Amsterdam, or south use the Harwich to the Hoek which is closer to Rotterdam.

The ferry from Northern Germany to Denmark is not operating as a road tunnel is being built.

Which part of Denmark are you thinking of driving to?

KnickerlessParsons · 17/05/2023 10:28

Thank you both.
Probably the Dover-Calais ferry, but not necessarily. The route via Hamburg would probably necessitate two overnights on the way up and down, but we'd be coming from the SW, so would otherwise need a stopover in the U.K., so it's swings and roundabouts.
We were wondering where to make the journey longer and so part of the holiday so interested in suggestions for nice places to stay and things to see not too far off route.

Never done the journey via France.

We always stop in Munster rather than Hamburg as we prefer it and is a lovely little town.

Where you stop en route will probably depend on where you wish to go in Denmark - if you only plan to visit the Jutland side then it is a shorter than going to Copenhagen. Funen, as suggested above, is well worth a visit, lots to do on the island itself and visiting Odense which is very beautiful. If travelling to Copenhagen side of Denmark Funen makes an ideal stopping point.

From the SW of England, it still makes more sense to take the ferry from Harwich to the Hook of Holland than from Dover to Calais/Dunkirk. Drive north around London and then take the A120. Take the overnight ferry and you'll arrive in Holland fresh for the drive to Denmark.

Hook of Holland to the Danish border at Padborg in Southern Jutland is about 7-8 hours, so add a stop or two for comfort breaks and some food, and you should still reach Denmark by late afternoon or early evening as the ferry docks at 07.00.

If you want to make and overnight stop in the border area, staying at Tønder, Ribe or Aabenraa in Denmark (or Flensborg on the German side) would be ideal. From there you continue north into Jutland (Legoland/Lego House, Jutland West Coast, Kolding, Aarhus, Silkeborg lake district, Randers, Djurs Sommerland & Ebeltoft, Aalborg - there's lots to see on Jutland!) or east over to Funen/Odense and on to Sjælland (Copenhagen, Roskilde and much more).

Yes - did it last summer. Placemarking post now but will return later.

Crikeyalmighty · 17/05/2023 19:38

We did it when we lived there to Copenhagen but used the Rodby route which others have said is shut. I would break it at Munster or Bremen which we have done. Then if going via Jutland break again at Odense if going to Copenhagen (Odense is lovely!! )

AnnaMagnani · 17/05/2023 19:41

Just don't do it.

My dad did it every year for our holidays. The journey is loooooong and results in tired driver, irritable kids and a general family fallout by the time you arrive.

At least we weren't going far into Jutland. Anything further and there might have been bodies under patios. Even the drive to Harwich was bad.

Thanks for the tips everyone - lots of food for thought!

we did it last summer. out on Ferry via Hook of Holland, one stop in Bremen and then the little ferry to Rodbyhaven and on to Copenhagen. A long drive but doable.

for the return we made a trip of it with stops in Legoland, the netherlands and Bruge before getting the channel tunnel back.

FraterculaArctica · 17/05/2023 22:36

Contrary to a previous poster, I would say absolutely do it! We had an amazing time. We did overnight crossing Harwich to Hook of Holland, then overnight in Bremen. Then 3 nights in Jutland (close to Legoland). Then we did 1 night in Copenhagen, drove across the Oresund bridge to Malmö, then overnight ferry to Travemunde. One night in the northern Netherlands and final night on the overnight ferry back to Harwich.

Sounds like your route was similar @parietal !
