Be Honest: How expensive is eating out in the Caribbean?

We booked to go to Grenada in November on a whim. Had a vague idea that a main course would be around £8-10. Now it turns out, the hotel menu on their website was from 2018 and didn't include 10% VAT and 10% service charge...

Having looked at other places, nice (but not amazing by European city standards) seems to be about £40 a main course... and basic local restaurants about £15 (More expensive than Brixton!)

Lol, very. I am not sure about Grenada but Barbados - ouch!

We went to Barbados earlier in the year and it was eye watering expensive. Prices have gone up in the Caribbean since Covid, I’m in no rush to go back!

DibbleDooDah · 17/05/2023 07:48

Yep - the prices you quoted sound about right. It’s really expensive.

oh dear! From what I can gather, Barbados is one of the pricier islands in the Caribbean.

I think we will have to reconsider our trip, and look at somewhere less expensive.

is that in a hotel? Grenada is a very safe island so go out and about and eat where the locals do. Especially if you have a car. We found lots of little places, there was a nice dockside restaurant near the airport, an Italian just up the road from our hotel. Even the local Sports Bar, lots of the local ting men hanging around outside, al unfailingly polite to us and even stopped the traffic to let us cross the road with our two tweens.
grenada is lovely and very untouristy compared to most of the Caribbean. Do get out and about to the rainforest, beaches, capital city , lots to see and do.

I live in Punta Cana Dominican Republic, and eating out at "tourist" restaurants can look cheap until you add the 18 % tax and the 10% grat on. There are a few exceptions here within walking distance of my house and also 3 major resorts. I go for taco tues at a bar right on the beach and they are 99 pesos for most of the varieties and 119 pesos for the ahi tuna tacos. also 159 pesos for the best margaritas! there are specials but you need to know when and where at all restaurants. However this is the land of the All Inclusive hotels , so most tourists only go out to eat if they are already off resort with sightseeing tours. Most don't venture out at mealtime as most of the on resort restaurants are very good and included

Really expensive, a lot of Americans go and they are used to paying high prices.

I think you have to know where to go in the Caribbean, for example in The Cayman Islands the main touristy restaurants are generally pricey, but if you ask locals for recommendations you can sometimes eat far better food for far less money.

(More expensive than Brixton!)

Brixton isn't a tourist destination though! Grin
