Do you regularly holiday alone? Any tips?

Afternoon all,

I would really like to go on holiday alone. I love the idea of it being just me to properly unwind (abroad) sun, all inclusive etc. I’m early 30’s female, I’m just a tad concerned about being on my own in a foreign country safety wise.. am I overthinking things?

Well I guess it depends on where you choose to go. Most European countries are going to be fine, Morocco I'd be less inclined to go on my own. I've been to Greece several times on my own, both to an AI and a B&B. Never had any issues.

I've travelled everywhere! Well- not quite!
Take a few good books. You'll meet people!
If you want time on your own just for a week or so, enjoy! It's easy to chat to people and it's lovely being able to fuck off when you want to.
Don't people please- ie chat when you don't like them. You'll never meet them again!
Go anywhere! Seriously!
One day you'll look back on what a fab time you had.
And romances possibly 😜🤞

I used to travel loads on my own and loved it. Then i had kids, so now i travel with them, occasionally dh comes along but hes limited on annual leave days.

  1. you say you want All inclusive. I never really drink loads as a solo female. Because a) drinking on my own isn't fun for me, and b) safety reasons. I might have a glass of wine with dinner or a cocktail in the evening but i would never drink drink.

  2. pick your hotel/destination carefully. I'd avoid party central and go somewhere with a slightly more chilled vibe.

  3. you get used to eating dinner by yourself in restaurants. At first it may feel a bit awkward and i used to always bring a book or play on my phone but now i love people watching from a terrace.

I travel alone a lot. And love not having to wait around for anyone, (and not having someone get huffy when I'm on go slow).

I've done an all inclusive alone as part of a longer trip and it's not really my thing. I found the buffet stressful as a lone traveller.
Always have a book or magazine with you to put on your table.

I have been to Doha, Qatar a number of times alone, I know it's a bit random in terms of places, but I felt incredibly safe and the resort (Sharq) was very pleasant with a private beach, and lovely food. I was able to travel around in an Uber and sightsee without any concerns

I've been to Italy, Thailand, Canada, Sweden, Greece and USA on my own I love it!! I wish I could do more solo trips but I went and had a child and scuppered that 😂.

I've never done all inclusive on my own but I'm sure that would be nice. As someone else said you will chat with people. I'm very introverted and find just a brief conversation a day will keep you going.

My tips are go somewhere you're really interested in. I went to Rome alone and it's still my number 1 fave ever holiday. I went to the museums and just really indulged and stayed as long as I liked. Much longer than anyone else would tolerate! Was fantastic.

Booking an activity can give you just enough human contact. I like diving so if I book a dive you can have a bit of chat then be on my way afterwards.

Good books are a must. A journal is lovely too so you can get your thoughts out and it's lovely to read back later.

I tend to have a big meal at lunch then have street food/ room service/ take away for dinner never got used to having dinner alone in a restaurant but don't mind lunch for some reason.

Yes Popuppilot, that's a good point, I used to love having a lovely lunch with a glass of wine and watch the world go by (the Liston area of old Corfu Town is particularly good for this), then I'd rarely bother too much with dinner as those did feel more set up for couples/families.

Thank you all for your replies. I take on board the buffet/eating in the evening, I was only thinking all inclusive so I didn’t have to worry about food rather than the alcohol (that’s how lazy I’m planning on being!) Having a decent lunch idea sounds great though!

You’ve definitely all gave me the push I needed to book though! X

I've not holidayed alone but travelled around for business on my own.

I wouldn't bother with AI but would stay B&B in an aparthotel where you get at least a fridge and a balcony or terrace is always a must for me. I'd have a decent breakfast (love a hotel breakfast but I don't like buffets for lunch or dinner) and then go out for a walk, sightseeing, museums etc for the day and have lunch while out and about. I'd also do lots of swimming, either in the sea, or hotel pool.

Evenings would probably reading and a couple of drinks and snacks on the balcony rather than going 'out for dinner' each evening as I wouldn't want another full meal after breakfast and a late lunch out each day.
