3 days of sun and see £1,200

This English weather is really getting me down; what keeps me going is a holiday every 6 weeks; however we didn’t book anything in half term as DD is doing GCSES. Next holiday is end of July so thinking of booking 4 nights holiday package with EasyJet beginning of June for DH birthday which comes to around £1,200 without food. I need the sun and the sea; cannot stop thinking of it.

will people do it? Assuming you have the money of course

How do you have enough holiday? And should you not be supporting your dc with revision, school, gcse stress?

This gets asked time and time again on the Holidays board.

People typically get 20-30 days annual leave per year plus 8 or 9 bank holidays (10 in 2022…), quite often with an option to buy more days and/or roll forward unused leave from previous years (e.g. the Covid years).

Given one need only take 1 day of annual leave for a weekend away, or 2 days’ annual leave to get 5 nights away (if flying out the evening before), is it really so hard to understand how someone can go away every 6 weeks with their leave allowance?

Have you thought about moving to a warmer, sunnier climate? It'll probably work out cheaper.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 11/05/2023 17:22

I love holidays, we have had or have got booked 5 this year and I’m open to more. They don’t all have to be expensive or long. I work shifts and part time hours so swapping shifts means I can be off for a good run and don’t even need annual leave. However I have a 16yo and wouldn’t go without her during her GCSEs. She’d be furious, she lives to travel too.

CoronationKicking · 11/05/2023 17:25

No of course I wouldn't leave her for the sake of a couple of days sun

MermaidEyes · 11/05/2023 18:30

Well it's been two days so I'm guessing Op is not coming back.

Maybe they're on the beach in Tenerife.

Just thinking this! I love holidays, but the thought of all the packing/sorting/travelling every 6 weeks is exhausting, even if I had the money and was willing to spend it!
It really isn’t exhausting, I think the more trips you do the more organised you get. I’ve booked a cheeky trip abroad and I leave tomorrow, the packing took 90 minutes. I am away again at half term so I won’t even unpack my holiday toiletry bag. I usually allow a month from getting back on a trip and traveling again. I make sure I see my friends the week before I go and the week I get back.

Thank you for the replies.

I have 25 days annual leave and purchase 2 more plus bank holidays.

We love travelling and prioritise that over clothes, take aways and other things.

We can’t move to a warmer country as our jobs are here and don’t want to disrupt the kids education.

I grew in the tropics and miss the sun.

It is no a long holiday every 6 weeks but change of routine/scenery.

We don’t have family in the UK.

Not sure how else can we support DD with the exams; it is her responsibility and we can’t study for her.

Once you get use to travel packing and unpacking is not that difficult.

yes, weather was nice today but I can’t count in one hand the sunny days so far this year.

We are both foreigners and don’t have family in the UK.

I prefer to spend money on experiences than other material things.

Will look for a cheaper deal 4 nights.

I meant I purchase 2 extra weeks so 35 days plus bank holidays and weekends

We travel a lot with the children too so they are not neglected

i think fucking off during your childs exams is pretty selfish tbh
yes they have to do the study but they need support in other ways
who are they staying with, you say a relative but then say you have no family

Teenstripalone · 11/05/2023 20:23

Sadly the dream of moving to a warmer weather in Europe are gone with Brexit. We are both foreigners but no Europeans and would like to stay in Europe ideally.

It's not just the studying, as pp have said. It's the encouragement and checking on her each morning, taking to her after her exams, making sure she's eating and resting etc.
Just being there to give her a hug and say it's ok, just do your best. We're here for you.

CoronationKicking · 11/05/2023 20:42

"Not sure how else can we support DD with the exams; it is her responsibility and we can’t study for her."

By being there for her instead of prioritising a fucking beach for a couple of days? Making her food, talking to her, giving her a hug, making sure she's rested. Just cheering her on because she's your daughter and showing her that she's important to you.

Ridiculous and selfish not to wait for her to finish her exams when you have loads of breaks away anyway.

Ha, I have a permanently packed toiletries bag! Then I have a list on my phone of things not to forget, so it takes around an hour to pack for short breaks and a couple of hours for longer breaks.

Really not that stressful, and absolutely not a deterrent to going away as much as possible.

MermaidEyes · 12/05/2023 11:33

Who will your dd stay with then as you say a relative but then say you have no family here?! I've had a child go through exams, they're really fucking stressful, much more so than when I did mine 30 years ago. I wouldn't go away. It's a few weeks where you have to prioritise things other than yourself.
