Malaga is lovely

I like Greece in September.

Madeira might suit, it’s still quite reasonably priced. If you stayed outside of Funchal you could do a few levada walks (along the old irrigation channels). The landscape is stunningly dramatic and green. It doesn’t have much in the way if beaches but there are man-made rock pools.
Alternatively, parts of Greece would still be ok then, eg the Peloponnese. If you stayed in eg Nafplio that would be a good base for sites like Mycenae and Epidaurus. If you went further across to eg Kardamyli or Stoupa, there are lovely beaches and you could do some walking, explore the Mani.

I only travel in Europe away from the main heat/touristy season of Summer! DH and I have no children and equally enjoy walking, good food/wine and history. All my recommendations are pre-covid though, so prices/things etc might well have changed!

Where in Majorca are you thinking of staying? We stayed near Palma. There was a small gauge train from Palma to Soller. It was a lovely day out and we caught a local bus back to Palma as is was quicker. You can do the trip the other way around though. From my limited trip- more to see/do in Palma, but if its mainly beach you want then Soler might be better.

Malaga City. Not one of the many beachy, Brits-abroad, touristy places along the coast. It was 3 euro each bus trip from the airport to the 'city' and very easy to walk around the entire place. A mix of locals, Spanish, British, French and German tourists but also working 'city'. Very small in comparison to a 'city though'. More like a small town. There is a beach, castle, promenade to walk along, museums, lovely restaurants etc.

We last stayed at Santa Cruz apartments. Although we ate out most days, we have the option to cook in the apartment, which was right next to the most amazing markets. A day trip to Ronda by train was amazing too.

Madrid: Lots of museums and history. We walked everywhere. A day trip on Toledo was fantastic.

Another vote for Madeira

Sicily's lovely. Or maybe Corsica? We had a great holiday there pre kids. Wonderful walking up in the mountains if you're hiring a car, great food.

Thankyou for your replies
i am very fortunate (old) and have been to most of the places listed here.
Except Mallorca. We have been to Greece lots of times over the years but could look at an island we haven't been to yet.
We were looking at a few nights in palma then 5 nights in the north of the island.
i'll keep my eyes peeled and any other ideas are very welcome and helpful

In late September you’d have to chose your islands carefully. The weather starts to turn a bit then and can get quite wet and windy. The smaller islands with small resident populations start closing down as people head back to the mainland. The further east, the better I’d say.

Or Crete continues quite late into the autumn.

TheDogsMother · 09/05/2023 11:24

A few nights in Palma then get the train and tram to Port Soller for a few nights. If budget allows then the Hotel Esplendido is lovely.

Another vote for Malaga (city). If you haven't been OP it seems to tick a lot of your boxes.

Great city, beach on the doorstep, museums, history, shopping, and a wonderful outdoor dining scene around the Cathedral area. Buzzing.

There is also a chance to easily get off the reservation by taking a day trip to walk the Caminito del Rey, take the train from Maria Zambrano station in Malaga to El Chorro. Not for the faint hearted but not too strenuous either. You can also do Córdoba (my favorite) and Granada from there.

Rhodes

We often do Palma in October and it’s lovely and warm. I’ve done Croatia and Corfu a few times in September.

I’d say south of France ( I always do). Flights with BA from London to Nice including hold luggage ( so you can bring back wine) are £250 for both of you return. Cheaper with hand baggage and much cheaper with Easyjet.
Nice is a bit of a dump frankly but a short train ride is Villefranche sur mer or Menton both beautiful. Lots of spectacular walks and quirky French villages to explore. Villefranche has a proper beach and great sea. Fab food and wine. Apartments are about £120 a night with views, close to the beaches and old town. Cheaper further out but not recommended.
