Where have you been on a solo holiday?

I haven't been on holiday in 8 years and feel o deserve a break. The reason I haven't is due to a lack of people to go with which is sad.

I am thinking about going alone but unsure about destination. I am not interested in clubbing holidays and I'm early 30s.

Where would be good to go, any recommendations?

I went to the Costa del Sol for a September break a few years ago. Small 5 star hotel right on the beach and no kids. It was lovely and I could totally please myself as it was only me

ArianahX · 04/05/2023 18:03

I haven't been solo but my sister has been solo to:

Samos (Greek Island) twice, the Greeks were lovely to her.

South of France, to Antibes area - lovely but the beaches get very busy in summer and I think there's very limited public beach space.

Florida, stayed in Clearwater, she hated it as the Southern attitude to lone women especially in restaurants was terrible

Lanzarote several times to air bnbs in Matagorda near Puerto del Carmen - great, very safe & friendly. She did once stay in a hotel but prefers air bnbs and usually hires a car.

I went to the Bahamas (Bimini) and stayed on a small resort where we did yoga, ate very well and went out every day into the Caribbean on a catamaran, the main objective to see - and be in the water with - wild spotted dolphins.
(Which we didn't encounter until the last day.)

There were many other people who had travelled there solo, from the US, UK and other European countries - but there was total of I think about 18 of us altogether for that week.

From Ft Lauderdale to Bimini was by seaplane.

But a big resort was being planned then and has not been completed, so I don't know if there is another means of travel to the island.

Could you recommend the hotel please?

I've been on my own to a spa resort in Miami, to Berlin for a long weekend, and to various nice seaside B&Bs. Going on holiday alone is fantastic, if you don't mind eating alone in restaurants, and understand that you won't have anyone to share special moments with! Of course, there's always social media. :-) I'm sure I bore my friends with my holiday messages.

I've been on cruises. Fred out of Tilbury advertised for solo people - no surcharge and putting on a table with others. Had to manage a change as all the others disappeared but one and he was hunting. Not nastily, but I hadn't had to manage pickups since I was at college, and he was persistent. The activities off ship were good. Also Hurtigruten out of Bergen, again good activities. And a Northern Lights cruise. Plus museums and snow.

Laughing at someone saying Florida!! All I kept getting over there was “where’s your husband?”

Thailand or Bali in one of the pricier areas will get you grown up backpackers who are up for chatting and doing stuff. I find both places so free and welcoming.

cloudjumper · 04/05/2023 18:23

Venice and Paris - city trips are great when travelling solo!

DisplayPurposesOnly · 04/05/2023 18:27

Boston
Cornwall
Edinburgh
Northumberland
Reykjavik
Seville
Zambia

Ah, missed Amsterdam from my list.

My DD had a wonderful trip on a tour bus camping in Tanzania the group were mixed singles and couples and she never felt ‘odd one out’.

After that she did a trip in Croatia where you swam from different islands accompanied by a support boat that was a larger group of people but also great fun.

She was early 30’s at the time.

minipie · 04/05/2023 18:32

Lots of companies organise small group trips which tend to be sightseeing/walking/eating focused - eg Intrepid, Explore. Groups are a mix of ages but if you want to find a similar age group you can ring up and ask who’s booked onto what
trips.

Agree Thailand would be a good option if travelling around alone. I imagine Australia/NZ would be too.

PuppyPerson · 04/05/2023 18:33

I don't know what your budget is but I second Thailand, it's full of solo travellers, but you don't have to be social if you don't want to. I had 3 weeks there solo at your age. I travel alone often and am happy on my own but did an organised day trip here and there which is a good way to see and do things in a group.

Madrid city break. Perfect 👍

Cantwaitforsummertime · 04/05/2023 18:37

Singapore. It’s very safe and orderly. An amazing blend of cultures with so many things to see and do.

Newusernameaug · 04/05/2023 18:37

On holiday solo right now, in the Algarve but been all over solo for both business and pleasure.

I've been to Florida on my own and didn't get anyone asking where my husband was. What a weird thing to say.

I'm currently in Chania on my own.
In case anyone's interested, husband is at home after a long weekend climbing Snowdon or whatever it's called now, with his kids.

Then in November, while he's in kl with his son and gc's, I'm doing a train trip through the Netherlands.

Choconut · 04/05/2023 18:39

On my own I've spent 3 months travelling round Europe, 6 months round Asia, a couple of months in the US and Canada, oh and also 10 days in Jordan.

It really depends on your budget and what you want though. If you want Europe then I'd say Mallorca - Palma de Mallorca for a few days to see the sights and then the wooden tourist train and tram down to Port de Soller for a few days by the sea with lovely restaurants (and you can get the tram up to Soller and stroll around there as well). I've been all over and IMO it's the perfect trip that ticks all boxes and isn't over run with kids or too 'Brits abroad'.

TreesAtSea · 04/05/2023 18:45

Amsterdam. Wonderful city whatever you like doing. Friendly people, English widely spoken if that's important to you and so much to see and do. If you're within easy reach of London, you can get there direct by Eurostar.

suburbophobe · 04/05/2023 18:51

I love travelling solo. Can do what I want, if I want, when I want.

Always meet people to chat to.

Never stay in Airbnb. I live alone already.
Like being in someone else's home but you have to pay.
And you have to clean it before leaving! Fuck that. I do enough of that at home.
Also, AirBnB means it's harder for locals to find a place to live.

Hotels and hostels are good for meeting people.

There's some solo women travel pages on FB. Now THEY will inspire you!
One woman did solo around Pakistan. 😯

suburbophobe · 04/05/2023 18:51

By the way, the photos she posted of Pakistan, they were stunning.

Danielle9891 · 04/05/2023 18:55

I had enough of work and the UK and I went travelling solo around Australia on a working holiday visa. It was my 1st time being on a plane and leaving the UK.

It was the best thing I ever did. I was able to pick what I wanted to do, I got to visit the places I wanted to go and eat where I wanted to eat.
I stopped in hostel (Australian hostels are better than most hotels over here) and got to meet loads of people and even my partner.

MinnieMountain · 04/05/2023 18:55

I go walking in Pembrokeshire or the Peak District every year.
I went on a group swimming holiday to Slovenia last year. I’m going there alone this year.
Also got the now defunct sleeper train to Venice.
