We'd love to take the kids 7+10 on a cruise next year weve done one ourselfs as a honeymoon and really enjoyed but it just seems extortionate with the kids, the holiday times, will they enjoy it, is there enough to do.
We don't like flying so it has to be a round trip from England
Yesterday we spoke to a travel agent to see whats out there a 7 night in May school hols on p+o ventura to Spain and France stopping at 4 ports for a balcony cabin is £3096!
Then there was a 7 night in Feb on the iona to Germany and Netherlands for £2296 again I think that was a balcony

Im so confused what to do . Anyway yes the point is have you done a cruise as a family of 4 with kids in similar age if so what ship did you enjoy it and how much did you pay please ?

I don’t think the price for the May one is that bad. It’s also comparable with a four star AI hotel and flights for the same time.

Is it a family room( bunk beds) or two king beds?

PinkPlantCase · 01/05/2023 07:04

We did them every other year when I was a kid, starting from when my younger siblings was around 4. We’d go camping 1 year and in a cruise the next sit even out the cost. I think we’ve even been on the Ventura!

My family is still very young, 2yo and another on the way. But when they’re a bit older I’d love to take them on a cruise.

A few things, you really don’t need a balcony, you hardly spend anytime at all inside the cabin because there’s so much to do on the boat and so many different kinds of areas to spend time in. Half the time we had an inside cabin and that was just fine, though it’s nice to see outside when you pull up at port in the morning.

The kids clubs are brilliant. You could easily not see your kids for most of the trip if that’s how you like it 😂 my family used to have a rule that if we weren’t in a port then we needed to atleast have dinner together.

There are always lots of deals if your shop around, maybe less in school holidays but my parents go quite often and always seem to find a great deal. Unless you’re big drinkers try and avoid the option of getting your discount in on board credit. You could spend it on trips out when you’re at port. Recently though because so many people have their discount this way these days my parents have known people struggle to get through the free on board credit and wish they’d of just got more money off the overall price instead.

£3000 ish doesn’t sound too far off tbh cost wise. Have a look without the balcony. But they really are exceptional holidays. It’s like being at an all inclusive place but getting to see so many different interesting places. It also give kids more independence as the boat is pretty safe.

Hidden costs wise, I don’t think drinks are included on any of the cruise companies now. Even soft drinks. They often have an extra fancy restaurant that you can pay to use, but the included restaurants are still very good and quite fancy anyway! Tips can add up to hundred pounds plus depending on how long the cruise is, I think each company gives guidance on them. Eg, tips for the people who look after your cabin and the people in the restaurant. These are generally paid through cash in an envelope at the end but there might be other ways to do it now. If you’re into spa treatments these will cost extra.

I've cruised a few times with kids. Would recommend. Those prices don't look bad at all.

nannyl · 04/05/2023 14:24

Definitley give it a go

My children have cruised since being babys / toddler. (now 10 and 12)

We did Iona / 7 nights zubrugge / rotterdam / hamburg in February and had a lovely time.

We have also done Fjords, France and Spain, with P&O, and have Spain and Portugal and Fjords booked again.
We have done Med with NCL, but much prefer P&O

My children have done all sorts of kids cubs with P&O / eurocamp / tui etc and they said that Iona kids club was their best one EVER

IMO P&O are brilliant for famlies. (Ive done 9 cruises so far, more than the rest of my family)

Book it and enjoy it. You cant go wrong

Out of interest, on a winter cruise in N Europe there's obviously no opportunity to enjoy outside pools etc. What is there for kids to do onboard a cruise ship when it's out at sea?

User63847484848 · 04/05/2023 14:52

I’ve recently done it on my own with children. It was really successful as my younger one likes kids clubs and meeting other children and the older ones could do their own thing. I thought it was reasonable value. I was extremely glad we had a balcony so would disagree with a pp about that. Paid £1600 but was only 4 nights and was April. I managed to only spend an additional £50 on top of the onboard spending they gave me and was quite strict with us when we went ashore so reigned in the spending there eg just had a waffle in Bruges not a full meal since meal on the boat was all paid for. And got public transport/made our own way at the port rather than expensive organised shore excursions.

nannyl · 04/05/2023 14:54

my children loved the infinity pool in february!

It was heated. We also all enjoyed mooching in the hot tubs.

If its a term time cruise they have a HUGE entertainment programme, so there are some kids theatre shows / magician type people in the club house during the day

Theres a 4 screen cinema .

Things like clay model making and charachter meet and greets.

My children love kids club on sea days and they create a really fun full on programme of things that kids enjoy.

deck games / table tennis / sports courts.

You will NOT be bored!.... there is too much to do to fit it all in!

nannyl · 04/05/2023 14:55

Also most of the ships have at least 1 indoor under cover pool (some have a roof that can open, but will be closed when not in a hot climate)

HermioneWeasley · 04/05/2023 18:49

We’ve done a few and loved them. Those prices don’t look bad to me

PurpleFlower1983 · 04/05/2023 19:54

We did the Easter cruise on P&O Arvia, awesome ship! Balcony was £3800 for two weeks. We ended up upgrading but that was the original price. We’re doing canaries in October for just under £3000 fly cruise.

PurpleFlower1983 · 04/05/2023 19:54

Kids club is amazing!

whoops - sorry to bring Alan's pejazzle into this! I've asked for it to be removed (not his pejazzle, I don't expect mods to handle that!)

Stevie77 · 05/05/2023 22:34

okay, sounds tempting. Can anyone recommend a good website where cruise virgins can understand how it all works? Difference between cabins, cabin locations etc?

Swishhh · 06/05/2023 16:04

We started cruising when our DC were 9 and 11 and had lots of fantastic holidays. My DC particularly liked the food, joining in different activities and the days out. We always book two interconnecting cabins and only use the door to my DH’s and mine cabin for exit and entry into the room.
As they got older they got into different things on the ship.
We all enjoy I’ve skating and the ice shows.
My older DC loves the jacuzzis, the younger one quizzes.
They both like counting how many countries they’ve been too.

HecticHedgehog · 06/05/2023 17:15

Is it ever possible to get cabins for a family of 5?

Swishhh · 06/05/2023 17:31

Is it ever possible to get cabins for a family of 5
you could look at suites but it’s normally cheaper to get two interconnecting cabins.

nannyl · 06/05/2023 21:35

Ventura (P and O) have a large family room which is a double bed, then another room with in it thats got 4 bunks, + a seating area and extra large balcony.

Its like a balcony cabin plus inside cabin that sleeps 4, so 6 beds in total

I believe there are only 2 of these cabins on the ship and im not aware of any others that have them, but her sister ship, Azura might.

You will not be able to book this online but might if you call P&O direct.

Or otherwise get adjoining cabins (which are also quite limited)

Poppyblush · 08/05/2023 07:01

Don’t forget that includes all good!

do get a balcony

Poppyblush · 08/05/2023 07:01

FOOD!!

CoolShoeshine · 08/05/2023 18:06

We’ve sailed Princess to Scandinavia in school holidays and it was very good value. Plenty of kids in the clubs. Beautiful ship with great pools.
personally I’m in the inside room camp, it’s way cheaper and I’d happily share a room with my dh and two older teens to be thrifty! Balconies tend to be cramped so I don’t use them much anyway. You can put on the tv in the morning to see the view!

Bumping up my earlier question - any good websites that explain how the whole cruise thing works? Information on cruise companies' websites is not great and I can figure out what the prices include, what the different cabins mean, how are they suitable for families etc.

gogohmm · 10/05/2023 16:41

My kids loved it, we did Disney. Fountain drinks from the buffet are usually included so worth taking refillable bottles. Marella is all inclusive.

Stepbystep100 · 10/05/2023 16:50

Yes, twice, sharing a cabin for 4. In summer school holidays.

These were 15+ years ago now. We picked Fred Olsen because they don't have major kids activities but there are a few and we liked to spend time with them.

We started with Norway. 10 nights. Fjords and midnight sun. £1800 booked with 6 weeks to go. Did all but one port independently and took a cruise trip when.at the North Cape.

We loved it and booked in advance for following year. £2400. 10 nights baltic cruise..again we did all the trips ourselves except Russia where we used the cruise lines offerings.

Fabulous time on both.

We paid tips and for drinks but it wasn't terribly expensive once we were on.board. being careful and planning our days was important before we went to.minimise day trip costs.

Kids loved both! Especially the captains dinners
They wore page boy/bridesmaid outfits to formal nights but could avoid them.by going to bistro if preferred
