Amsterdam and where to eat.

Can anyone point me in the direction of decent eateries for either lunch , snack or evening meal please?
At this point I am heartily sick of people telling me about the cannabis cafes and Red light district etc etc etc, it's all they seem to comment on. I'm going for the culture and hopefully good food!

Cannibale if you are a meat fan.

Yes, great steaks here

The brasserie at the Dylan hotel — I think it’s called Occo or something — is very nice. I also like The Seafood Bar.

Anyone who blethers on about red light district and weed is a bit uninformed really. It’s such a small part of the city; Amsterdam is a huge place.

I went in November and we had a great lunch/afternoon at Brouwerij 't IJ, a brewery in a windmill that did some amazing meat/cheese platters.

Our Dutch friend also took us to Kantijl & de Tijger for Indonesian, which we all loved.

I'm an Amsterdam blogger. This is our list of all our favourites (I'm English, my husband is from Amsterdam. We live in London but visit extremely often and eat out there a huge amount)

Thai tiger and Lalibela (ethiopean food).

We loved 'Senses' restaurant (but then we do love a good tasting menu!

I want to know this as my mates and I found it hard to find a non smokers coffee shop like costa

There's no Costa in Amsterdam. Lots of places like it that are nice, quirky, independent.

Everywhere and anywhere inside is non-smoking. Every building, every cafe or other establishment. Been like that for years.

Ironically, the coffeeshop that sells weed and hash you can smoke inside.

Great website @LondonMummer

I think it’s quite difficult to find anywhere decent to eat in Amsterdam (unless you’re stoned and/or like toasties!). Sorry but I thought the Foodhallen place was pretty dire (for food!) - though nice for a drink. I do like the Cafe Americain - lovely bar and the food is edible. I found the food in The Hague very disappointing too - though maybe if I’d seen @LondonMummer link it might of helped a bit!

😊 there is absolutely fantastic food to be had, you just need to avoid the super-grotty tourist traps aimed at stoned (British) tourists. And yes, it helps if you know where to look. Happy to help next time.

It's also worth knowing the difference between coffeeshops (mj) and coffee shops (coffee and cake and <drool> stroopwafel). In fact, most places that do coffee are usually called cafes to avoid confusion.

The coffeeshops are pretty obvious once you know what you’re looking for — they’re usually darkened windows, often have dark or black signage, and a particular font for the shop name. And they’re mostly concentrated in the Red Light District, which is a very small part of the city and easily avoided.

You need to come back and get on your bike lol.... coffeeshops all over town....
Some are light and airy.

True that TRL district is tiny.

Yeah sorry I wasn't very clear... I meant the tourist trap ones are mostly in the RLD. The more neighbourhoody ones, where regular Dutch people go, are more spread out aren't they.

Thanks, I'll need a month there at this rate!
