City break suggestions, couple in 20s

We have done

Krakow (didn’t rate)
Paris (didn’t feel safe)
Berlin (lovely)
Rome (gorgeous culture, way too warm when we went in June)
Edinburgh (LOVED IT)
London (liked, but found the crowds overwhelming and was expensive)

Desperate to get a couple more city breaks in before we have children, ideally one of these breaks will be to see Christmas markets somewhere.

Anyone with any suggestions? Where did you really enjoy? Bonus points if city is on the cheaper side. I don’t eat meat so that is a consideration for a lot of places we travel to

We enjoy: nice coffees and pastries, walks, good food, interesting museums, science.

A couple that I don't think have been suggested yet: Barcelona and Prague

Crikeyalmighty · 30/04/2023 15:33

Munich
Malaga
Seville
Istanbul
Copenhagen(not cheap)
Vienna
Florence
Lisbon

Absolutely, and everybody speaks English. If you can, stay in the old town, which is untouched and incredibly beautiful. But be prepared for snow!

I was suggesting Vienna as an anytime trip rather than a Christmas one; there's a ton to see whenever you go.

Sorry, thought I was replying to the question about Tallinn being safe there!

Piggywaspushed · 30/04/2023 15:40

Many of these suggestions are quite similar to Krakow, which you didn't rate ( why??)

Christmas, I'd say Cologne and Dortmund. We stayed in Dortmund and took train to Cologne.

In my 20s/ early 30s, I did Amsterdam, Bruges, Dublin, all good. I have since been to Pisa, Krakow, Florence, Venice, Rome. All great. I liked Amsterdam the least.

Piggywaspushed · 30/04/2023 15:41

Oh, and Barcelona. Lovely.

DorritLittle · 30/04/2023 15:43

Barcelona?

mewkins · 30/04/2023 15:43

Budapest lovely for Christmas markets and baths. But the veggie offering was a bit sparse (I went just before lockdown so not too long ago).

Sudeko · 30/04/2023 15:44

Turin, Zagreb or Stockholm.
I strongly disagree re Tallin. There isn't enough to do there IMO.

catlover33 · 30/04/2023 15:45

Christmas Markets:
Bruges/Brussels (could be done in one trip)
Budapest
Prague

Cardiff is good for a weekend

The Hague
Chester
Bristol*
Bath*

*I live between these two. They have Christmas markets, but in our family they are known as 50 sheds of shite.

I second Ghent and Copenhagen. I think I preferred Ghent but both were beautiful and relaxing.

The only time I went to the Bath Christmas market was the vastly more quiet/reduced one just after Covid. Have avoided before and since!

Looking at what you like / don't like and comparing it to us - I would say you'd like Stockholm
