General holiday moan/rant

This may seem like a really dumb thing to ask but how do you become that person that is booking holidays 1 or 2 years in advance, as mentioned in another thread? We can't even find somewhere we like for Summer 2023, probably because it has all been booked by the organised folks 😂

The amount of time it takes to research destinations, resorts, and hotels. It's like a second job. How do you choose if you're picking somewhere new? Just find it so painful to endlessly trawl through websites, destinations and hotels that end up being unsuitable. It makes me not want to go.

There also seem to be no last-minute deals anymore, not even short breaks. Maybe it's Brexit, or a post-Covid surge still, I don't know.

Also hotels 😕. What no one tells you is that as your kids get older for all of you to cram into one double room is not relaxing or fun and certainly doesn't feel like a holiday when you've paid thousands. Yet the majority of hotels are designed for 2 adults and 2 (young?) kids sharing a sofa bed. When you have one teen and one younger of the opposite sexes, that's not really an option but searching for those that have separate bedroom/s or interconnecting rooms is an additional challenge.

So any practical advice on how to win this part of life will be gratefully received🙏

People who leave it late to book really baffle me - you still have all the hassle of looking but also far less choice for far more money 🤷‍♀️.

We decide and book in September for the following summer. Use a travel agent as once I’ve chosen my location and dates I find the rest boring! Job done. Once the kids have left home then obviously we’ll be able to leave it much later as we’ll have so much more flexibility on dates but while we’re tied to school holidays early booking is the only sensible thing to do!

You’re right, it’s stupid. That’s why I want to try and get better at doing it at the right time. that’s why I’m asking, to hear how other people tackle it. I love travelling and visiting new places and it is exciting, but it can become just another chore too.

@Egyptiancottonhouse would you recommend where you stayed? I’d be happy to hear!

@Stevie77 i agree re it being a chore - that’s why I always use an agent. My job is done once I’ve chosen the location 😄

We generally holiday in the UK nowadays, so I (usually) decide whereish we will be going, we have to book leave in advance (way in advance) so have dates to range over when we see a bargain. Then Google "cheap, last minute, location" and a shed load of options come up.
Going to Florida for 3 weeks needs quite a bit of planning, a week in Majorca, less so, a long weekend somewhere in Devon, look , book, pack... kids just tend to go with the flow.

If you have a fussy eater then a hotel is a nightmare. Having early breakfast time is not relaxing.
Holiday cottages are self catered which is not a break for anyone and usually without a dishwasher to make things worse.

The packing and washing on return is crap. relying on people to look after pets is also stressful.

You book the wrong thing.

We always book a cottage/villa with a dishwasher and washing machine. We do breakfast like at home and then set out depending on what we want to do.
Lunch is on the go with either a picnic or eating out. Dinner is either eating out or something I throw into the oven.

Fussy eaters are catered for and the costs for eating out is budgeted into the holiday costs.

We always book somewhere with lots of choices and also at least one decent coffee shop for another morning coffee break.

I agree with the amount of washing and the pet issue though. We lost our pets two years ago and I must admit, it's a lot easier now.
