agree w/ blonde, esp. if u have young dc.

Do it in one go. TBH, they always exaggerate the flight time. It never takes as long as you'd expected it to. Much easier also, to do in one hit. Then you have only one chance of delays etc and one go at boarding etc etc. Far less mucking around IMO.

Yes avoid NYC at all costs. One long hop.

OverRated · 16/02/2008 14:30

Another one saying go for the longer flight. And avoid Chicago too.

SofiaAmes · 16/02/2008 14:33

Having done that trip many times with young ones, unless you have a few days to stay in NYC which helps with jet lag, I would advise the short hop +13 hours.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 16/02/2008 16:08

Where are you flying to on the west coast?.

One hop and then the longer flight is far preferable than two flights of an 8 hour duration (more delays are likely too).

thanks for the replies -- confirmation of what I was thinking.

We are going to Portland from Newcastle, so I am looking at the KLM flight from Amsterdam. Might even break it up with a few nights in Amsterdam.

First time I have been home in 4 years!

Oh, I love Portland

Hey, OA. Haven't seen you around for a long time. Welcome (temporarily) home. My 2 cents is along everyone else's advice: avoid JFK and LaGuardia at all costs.

If you can get a direct routing from Amsterdam to Portland I would certainly take that option.

Far better to do that than to attempt an internal transfer from an international flight to a domestic flight within the USA (because that process can take hours). Know also of too many people who have missed their connecting flights in such cicumstances.

ChippyMinton · 17/02/2008 08:43

OA, my DH is in Portland at the moment! He flies BA Heathrow to Seattle (9.45hs, non-stop), then either does the commuter flight, train or gets a lift.

oregonianabroad · 17/02/2008 20:20

Thanks, all, and hello, dooneygirl! I have been sooo busy, haven't been on much. Am going 'home' in July, can't wait.
