Please help a clueless first timer. Can we take a fairly new newborn on domestic plane and a coach?

Does a newborn sit in our arms for a (short -1hr 20) flight or do we need a seat for him/her?

Similarly will he/she need to be strapped into a car seat (which we'd be taking anyway) for a coach journey?

Baby could be as young as 12 days on the day (if I go overdue but could be 4 weeks) so am conscious that I"m probably mad to even consider it.

Thanks in advance for your help

You don't need a seat for a baby under 2 years old, they will ride on your lap,I would use a sling to keep the baby close to your body. You won't need a carseat for the coach journey, I think coaches that have seat belts only have lap belts but I'm not sure.

In your arms on the plane (this is good because it means they travel for freeeee!) and they will give you a special belt to strap baby to your belt.
You'll have to ask the bus company about the car seat. I think there has been a thread along these lines on here this week, by FAQ, so maybe worth searching for that.
You're not mad to consider it IMO. Nothing is impossible. In a way, it will be the easiest time in your child's life for you to travel with them. They are easier to please at that age (boob, cuddle, sleep).

No problems.Easiest at this age.

On the plane you carry them in your arms, I don't know about the coach, you could put them in the carseat on the seat, I did that on a train with mine when they were tiny. I think you should probably check with the coach company. If they use a seat, you will probably have to pay, otherwise the baby will travel free. Actually, I think it's easier travelling with young babies than with toddlers - you don't have to stop them running about and keep them entertained. I think other travellers are a bit more tolerant of tiny babies, too, you'll probably get a lot of admiration and people asking how old etc. I would make sure you have got a v well stocked nappy bag, plenty of muslins, wipes, etc. and drinks and snacks for you. They recommend that you feed the baby during take off and landing so they are swallowing, otherwise the pressure changes hurt their ears. Good luck!

Some airlines can be funny about very newborns travelling so check each's policy - easyjet is something like 2 or 3 weeks even if not premature. They travel on your lap.

Twiglett · 16/02/2008 15:37

they must be 2 weeks old as a minimum I thought

We flew back from Cyprus with dd2 age 2 weeks. Easiest flight I have done. I got to cuddle her for five hours while dh got to deal with dd1 . Coach will be fine. You could strap her into her seat but you won't be able to secure the seat to the coach seat if you see what I mean. I would still put her in the seat if you can, but if not I am sure she will be fine on your lap.
Babies have to be 48 hrs old before flying. HTH.
