Any ideas please for a holiday over New Year or 1st week in Jan?

Because of school & uni holidays not lining up & big exams next year etc knocking out more obvious times, we want to take a week's family holiday at some point either over New Year or the first week in Jan (if over New Year it wouldn't specifically be about celebrating it if that makes sense!).

2 adults, DCs 18 & 16 yrs - prefer SC, generally like city breaks, not looking for a hot/beach break but happy to consider anything really. Budget about £3K but could try and find more for the right holiday.

Any destination ideas would be gratefully received - I keep looking at destinations and then imagining them in a grey, post-Christmas slump which isn't helping!

Bonus if we could fly from Bristol 💐

New York! It’s amazing for New Year’s. Lots of stuff to do inside to escape the cold, some great January sales shopping, and all of the Christmas is still up so it’s cheerful!

Ljubljana was very lovely for a NYE break a few years ago, all lit up and very festive.

If you can stay until Jan 5th, Tenerife has some fab Epiphany parades with fireworks and carnivals. I remember the three wise men riding real camels through the streets throwing sweets to the kids, leading a huge parade of Roman soldiers, angels, the holy family etc.
The weather is usually warm and sunny too.

Thanks all - great suggestions! @Fivemoreminutes1 we went to New York not long before covid and loved it so maybe it's a bit too soon to revisit (although it was at a different time of year so sounds like a completely different experience), but I hadn't thought about maybe other cities like Boston or Chicago which might be worth a look.

@Twilightstarbright we actually went to Slovenia last year and it was one of our favourite holidays - I bet Ljubljana is even more special at NY.

@Babdoc Tenerife hasn't ever been on my radar but the epiphany parades sound amazing - off to investigate.

Really appreciate the ideas - anymore out there? 🙏

Iceland! Stunning that time of year. Northern lights are a possibility (I saw them and they blew me away).
Reykajavik is a stunning city, with lots to do, places to eat.
Golden circle tour, blue lagoon etc all in east reach.

only thing is is it's expensive for food & drink.

Mallorca. Will be around 18 degrees, dry and sunny. Perfect weather for golf or city break. Lots of family friendly accommodation options and Palma is a lovely city. They will also have celebrations up to Jan 5th/6th for Epiphany and the 3 king day.

I was pleasantly surprised by Tenerife, OP! If you avoid the tacky south overdeveloped bit around Playa de las Americas, it’s actually rather lovely. You can get a cable car up Mount Teide, or take the kids to Loro Park zoo (it started as a parrot rescue, but now has all sorts of creatures)
There are wild poinsettias flowering everywhere and amazing cactus filled landscapes. Costa Adeje has some fun “escape the room” adventures for the kids if you get a rare wet day. It’s a reasonably short flight for a reasonably priced winter sun break.

Las Palmas in Gran Canaria. A proper European city with an old town, museums, culture etc but with much nicer weather than mainland Europe and a city beach!

There will be a three kings parade in Las Palmas too in early Jan. I highly recommend the Thursday night tapas crawl in the old town! There are also lots of good tours of the country side and historic towns and villages on the island. Gran Canaria isn't t all beaches and bars (though that is good too!)
