I booked the wrong holiday

DH and I had an amazing holiday in Greece last year. He really wanted to go again. I said no, I wanted a different holiday.

Booked 10 nights in the Caribbean for later in the year and now just think I should have gone with Greece. I read more about the destination and just don’t think we’ll enjoy it as much. Read more about restaurant prices and it seems really expensive. I’m of an east asian background and I’ve read that people have faced issues. A friend just returned from St Lucia and said it was a hole.

Now flights to Greece are extortionate and the hotel we like is fully booked! Argh!

I’m shocked anyone would say St Lucia is a hole . Good god. St Lucia is stunning. Some folks shouldn’t be allowed on a plane

I haven’t been to St Lucia however I’ve been to Jamaica and I prefer Greece however I went to see family so your experience may differ to mine! See it as an opportunity, I’ve always said I rather find out myself whether somewhere isn’t great than through word of mouth!

I have been to 21 different Caribbean countries/islands - including St Lucia and Grenada and they're both amazing places.

St Lucia
• Boat trip around the pitons and Margot bay
• Sulphur springs + mud baths
• Torallie waterfalls which you can combine with the ATV Park so quad biking etc

Grenada
• Rhum Runner - amazing if you like alcohol, unlimited rum on a catamaran cruise and you stop at a lovely beach
There's lots of waterfall, beaches, west coast/east coast island tours you can do too! As well as river tubbing, the chocolate factory

Two amazing countries you can't go wrong ☺️

I live in the Caribbean and when people refer to poor, please note that the contrast between rich and poor is more present here, in the sense that you can drive on a road with most beautiful houses on the island and once you turn into a road next to it, you see old shabby wooden houses, that perhaps are boarded up partly.

For most Europeans this is the thing that is most striking when visiting the Caribbean as in Europe, although there is poverty,it is more behind closed doors.

Sorry but...are you for real? Thousands of people in this country are going without food to make sure their children can eat - you see the posts in this forum not infrequently - and you're moaning about having booked a luxurious holiday in the Caribbean instead of a luxurious holiday in Greece? I think this post would've been better kept in your head.

Yes thousands are.

I've been there.

But many more millions aren't and they are entitled to,spend their money.

The same way other countries have poverty and we like those with money coming to the uk.

It's how money is made in countries.

If those who couldn't spend didn't then others would be worse off.

Grenada is a lovely island. VERY safe, hire a car and drive around. It’s a small island and you can get around it in a day but there’s lots of places to see, visit the waterfalls, go up the rivers, chocolate and rum factories.
And take the local bus (aka a mini van squashed full of locals usually with blaring music - sounds awful but a lot of fun) into the capital, lovely town choc full of character (and hills).
I have travelled extensively in the Caribbean and whilst some places I’d advise caution (certain parts of Jamaica for example), Grenada is very well known as a safe and friendly place.
We would walk up the main stret after dark to a local Italian restaurant. Beside it was a sports bar and lots of the local young men would congregate outside. In the UK, I’d be cautious walking past but in Grenada, the young lads would all call out hello and would go out and stop the traffic for us to cross over.
Very untouristy and few hotels (although the island does get some big cruise ships in season so the locals are geared up to the fact that you will get lost and will alway point you in the right direction.
Enjoy!

St Lucia is amazing I really want to go back. Also love Greece ( some areas)

Ihatepainting · 17/04/2023 09:04

Greece is lovely and I enjoyed my vacation there, but I’d pick St Lucia over Greece every time and habe been twice. However it depends what you’re looking for . For me, Greece isn’t a patch on St Lucia..

st lucia is very rustic in many parts and yes a lot of poverty, but a lot of beauty and very different culturally

im genuinely shocked anyone would say it is a hole. If they wanted built up and commercialised they should have looked at Benidorm.

Vitriolinsanity · 17/04/2023 19:33

I'm dead jealous as I was supposed to go to St Lucia the week we entered Lockdown 1. I love the Caribbean and I love Greece, but the food in the Caribbean is my favourite. Pack a snorkelling set!

Sounds like you are getting cold feet. Do your research and enjoy your holiday. I think for those places I may have booked a hotel; however we did book self catering in Playa del Carmen / Mexico and ate street food and tried some of the local restaurants. We also rented a car to explore the ara.

Don't be such a dick. This is the holiday forum where people post about holidays strangely
