Paris recommendations

DH and I are planning 2 or 3 nights in Paris for our (25th) wedding anniversary at the end of May.
Would love to know of any hotel recommendations- ideally small, maybe quirky (ie - not a big chain), memorable (for the right reasons!)... not vastly expensive, although I realise it's Paris and won't be cheap.

Would love to hear of nice eateries too.

It's 25yrs since we last went (not on our honeymoon) and I didn't love it. But I want to, so I'm looking forward to going back.

Hotel Therese is delightful and very small and quirky.

Eateries: avoid La Coupole. Full of very badly dressed tourists and doesn’t feel remotely special, despite the beautiful Art Deco and great service.

Le Train Bleu inside Gare de Lyon, on the other main, is lovely. Great food and beautiful decor.

Check out the Bouillon chain of restos. Super cheap prices. Bouillon Julien is gorgeous and you can book. The original, Chartier, cannot be booked but is great fun. You queue and are given a seat wherever. No lingering encouraged, so maybe not for that lazy, long lunch.

Montmartre: walk up the back way, via Abesses. Start at the Mur d’Amour (now full of Instagrammers thanks to Emily in bloody Paris), go via Maison Dalida, the windmill and walk up via Maison Rose. Stunning view of Sacre Coeur from behind.

Favourite museum with great cafe is the Jacquemart Andre. Stunning art, and stay for lunch in beautiful surroundings. Great formules too for lunch. Only the French consider a glass of wine to count as same price as a soft drink!

Watching with interest!

Hotel: the hotel Rochechouart is lovely. Super convenient location in Pigalle (Bouillon Pigalle v close). Walk up hill to Montmartre . Slightly edgy location but v close to metro. Lots of lovely cool people there last time I met a friend staying there for coffee.

Pigalle is my favourite area of Paris.
also really like Republique, it’s the 11th A and you can walk most places. We enjoyed a coffee at Paperboy

then we walked through the square in Republique and down towards the Seine. It took about 35mins and we were right by Pompadou and The Louvre. We grabbed a picnic lunch and enjoyed people watching, my 3&7 Yr olds played in the city parks, we then walked to Bouillon Chartier, fully recommend for a Parisian meal, it’s quick it’s reasonable and it’s in a beautiful building.

I would also recommend Hotel Amor in Pigalle for a drink outside in their lovely courtyard

8 Rue de Navarin 75009 Paris France

Montmartre is wonderful to walk around but lots of expensive tourist traps. I would suggest downloading the FourSquare app it has some great places on there, you can search by budget, postcode, cuisine, so really handy!

I second Le Train Bleu. We had Steak Tartare and Crepe Suzette made at the table mmm.

Haus1234 · 16/04/2023 13:51

We liked Restaurant Pantagruel recently - it’s a tasting menu but absolutely loads of food so make sure you’re hungry (I was not hungry enough!).

If you want to go to any of the art museums you should book tickets in advance - we thought we could just show up and we were sadly mistaken (though the Rodin museum and the Pompidou were both not too bad, the Orangerie and Musee D’Orsay were crazy busy).

We stayed here last year. Wasn't too expensive, quite close to a metro station that seemed to have good connections. Also a Monoprix nearby and felt fairly safe. Easy walk to Eiffel Tower.

I loved The Drawing House hotel - has its own art exhibitions and artists decorating each room. Five minute walk from montparnasse tower.

Last time we went, we stayed at the Hotel Napoleon which was a great location and pretty quirky.

My husband is a foodie and booked Septime. It was amazing, but quite expensive.

Just coming back to close the loop on this.

We ended up staying here: https://hotelmagenta38.com/. It was a great find - lovely modern rooms, comfy bed, great shower, view from our room of Sacre Coeur. Free coffee and pastries available all day and a good buffet breakfast. 10 min walk from Gare du Nord and within 2-3 mins of 3 Metro stops all serving different lines. A brilliant location.

We ate at one of the Bouillon restaurants, so thank you to the PP who tipped us off on that one. We had our anniversary meal here https://www.dersouparis.com/, and it was one of the best meals I've eaten. 6 course tasting menu with cocktail pairing. Totally delicious.
