Booking VERY last minute in August (abroad)...anyone done it/any tips please?

We weren't originally planning on going abroad this year...now we are 😊 We have two weeks off work in August, 2nd/3rd week (dates not changeable) and would like to go somewhere for a week or ten days. Family of 5, 2 adults, 2 teens, 6 year old.

Haven't been abroad for 3 years and the prices now are an eye opener 😳 Holidays I would have paid £3k for a couple of years ago now seem to be double or more.

Seeing as we're late booking for this August anyway, we're wondering whether to risk leaving it super late to book in the hope of getting a bargain...like leaving it until the week before. Two days before even.

Anyone done this? Are we likely to meet disaster if we try and book at the beginning of August for less than a week away?

We have very few specific wants...Somewhere hot and a suitable resort (safety/activities etc) for teens and a 6 year old, decent rating/reviews - that's pretty much it. We'll fly from any airport in England or Wales, go to any Country, All Inclusive or Self Catering, 7-12 days duration. Not concerned if we have to sit seperately on the flight as long as 6 year old was with either me or DH obviously.

Anyone done this and how silly would we be to leave it this late? Are we even likely to get a deal or are we going to end up having to spend the same just with much less choice?

We did this in October / November and was still good availability and maybe 10% cheaper but in August at peak times its risky.

I think in peak times if you have a budget it’s too risky. I’ve just booked to go somewhere in 2 weeks & accommodation is v limited.

My experience in recent years is there aren't any 'last minute bargains' any more in school holidays. Tbh I'm not really seeing very many 'ear;y bird' bargains around much either.

We usuarly would go to
Marsa Alam in Egypt ( much queter and great beaches / hotels twice a year for just over £1000 pp all inclusive.

Got three weeks the last time we went Aug/ Sept 2019 for £1300pp absolutely great holiday.

Been looking for this year but other areas of egypt that we have also been to in the past but not as nice beaches / snorkling/ diving.
( uk stopped flights to Marsa Alam until next year hopefully)

My God the prices now for 2cweeks are from £1700 pp without extras and not so great beaches / hotels.

Ones we know are starting at £2400pp before your baggage etc and much much more.

We are only 2 adults but it's ridiculous, feel sorry for families with children. It must cost a fortune even in uk.

Looked at other country's but seems to be same everywhere .

They did say the days of cheap holidays / last minute deals are long gone.

Even September is expensive

I will keep looking but probably wont go away this year.

I wouldn't hold out for bargains.
I'm in a holiday FB group, & there's been lots of discussions about prices.
Jet2 has been the preferred option for many wanting package holidays, but now there's been a big exodus to EasyJet holidays as they are much cheaper - same hotel, board, etc. Check that luggage & transfers are included.
I've used EJh for city breaks, & they are fine.
