hi, i am travelling to australia tomorrow night with my 3 yr old daughter. She likes to have milk before she goes to sleep. I have just phoned the airline (and spoke to to a woman who could barely understand me) she told me i can only take 100ml of milk on the aircraft. So now i'm panicing cos my daughter will be very stressed without her milk!! someone please tell me whether this is true as i'm not sure the lady at the airline actually knew what i meant

Thanks very much in advance

Hello - I think, having had a conversation about this at Manchester Airport security this weekend, that you can take up to one litre of fluid through security as long as it is in separate small 100ml bottles. That's what one senior security lady said. I had my baby with me and they understood the problems of feeding them, even while confiscating my freezer pack to keep my expressed milk cold .

But you know, as long as you're not talking about expressed breast milk, you can always buy a pint of milk (or even two, three or four...) once you've gone through to airside??

Good luck with your trip. If that's all you have to worry about on a 24-hr flight to Oz with a three-year-old, I think you're doing brilliantly!

i travelled with my 8 week old baby last week with 200ml EBM in a 260 ml bottle. They have an exception to the 100ml limit for baby milk- though i did have to taste it.

It will be treated like any other liquid and you can only take 100ml through security. However when you are through security you can buy milk. Is it formula or normal milk? If normal milk buy in a cafe or something. If formula bring powder and buy water.

hi ladies, thanks very much for ur replies. i'm a bit worried as she has full fat cows milk which i don't think they class as baby milk. i don't mind buying it on the other side of security but i don't know if they'll let me take it on. Lauren x

They will let you take it on if you have bought it once through security. How do they know you bought it after security? Because they know you are not allowed take any liquids through security.

You should be able to buy cartons of milk in one of the self service cafes I think. Haven't flown long-haul for ages so not sure what is available.

hi buda, think i cross posted with you before..lol thank you for your reply, will i be able to buy juice to take on the plane too? also i'm going to take food with me too like fruit, biscuits, sandwiches and probably pasta with sweetcorn. the lady from the airline said its ok but i might have to taste it. I know she works there but she didnt sound too sure in her voice. Its ok as long as i throw it before i get off the plane in oz right? sorry bout the millions of questions thanks again, lauren x

If you're travelling through one of the big airports, you'll definitely be able to buy juice too - all those cafes have freshly squeezed orange and apple juice. You're right about rules about importing food into Oz; just chuck it before passport control the other side (there are bins for that purpose) or leave it on the plane. There's no problem now with taking food through security this end.

Re the cows milk, if you're really worried about not finding the full-fat version airside you could always decant a load into a baby bottle (even if she doesn't drink from one of those anymore) and take that through security. And then pour it into a sippy cup or whatever.

I had to taste my breast milk at the airport this weekend - quite weird having to do that in front of all these gurning security guards.

Yes you can buy juice and water to take on the plane. And snacks. I fly a lot with DS (Europe to Dublin usually - are flying tonight too) and I always bring snacks. It's never a problem.

I know Oz are strict about bringing food in so , yes, you will have to chuck whatever you don't use on the flight.

Singapore airlines are great- they have apple and orange juice and sandwiches on board so don't worry about those!

In fact you'll more than likely be able to get milk on board too, but to be on the safe side you can buy it once you're through security.

I honestly wouldn't worry about too many snacks as the crew walk around handing out things throughout the flight

They are the best airline I have ever flown with and I am very

Have fun!

Which airport are you departing from (it sounds like you're leaving from Heathrow). I ask this as some airport airside facilities are far better than others.

If you find a cafe like Costa post the security checks, they will sell you a cup of milk. Your DD should be okay in that regard and she can drink that before boarding.

If you are transferring through Singapore be advised that each security checkpoint and thus the line to get back on the aircraft is almost by the jetway to each aircraft so at that point airside there are no facilities.

Late addition to this post, but we had same at Christmas. My 2 year old daughter became a milk addict on the plane and the cabin staff were so patient - constantly refilling her bottle and getting it to exactly the right temperature for the fussy madam!! Lifesavers!
