Would you put your baby in the hotel cot? Pic included

We're going abroad to visit the in laws in June and staying in a hotel. DD will be 8 months. I want to take a travel cot as the hotel have really old cots and I'm worried about the safety of them and sids risk.

DH thinks I'm being out and the wooden hotel cot will be fine. I disagree because I think DD could pull herself up and tip out.
I don't like the metal cots as we had similar at the hospital i work at (they got condemned and replaced in covid) and babies would get their legs stuck in the bars and bump their heads on the metal.

Our luggage allowance is really stingy (thanks tui 🙄) so we will have to pay extra to take a travel cot but I think it's worth it.

Yes I would use the hotel cot.

Floralnomad · 14/04/2023 13:47

I wouldn’t use any old cot unless I took a new mattress with me , so no I’d go with the travel cot - although we co slept so this kind of issue never arose .

RagzRebooted · 14/04/2023 13:49

I'd use the hotel cot, it wouldn't even occur to me not to, I'd just be happy they had one.
Chances are the small child will be more sleepy after long days, or up later, or excited and refusing to sleep, so spending less time in it anyway. I think having a small child in a hotel, the cot would be the least of my concerns.

NoSquirrels · 14/04/2023 13:55

Yes, I’d use the hotel cot. My DC always slept badly in travel cots, where the mattresses are thinner and you have to bend down so far to put them down. I’d think they’d sleep better on a proper cot, and nothing looks worrying to me at all about those cots for an 8 month old.

Quitelikeacatslife · 14/04/2023 13:55

Can in laws buy a travel cot for you to use at hotel ?

mynameiscalypso · 14/04/2023 13:59

I think I would; you'll presumably be in the room too? The alternative is just to co-sleep.

MummyDummyNow · 14/04/2023 13:59

The wooden one looks fine, I'd use it.

fairgame84 · 14/04/2023 14:02

@Quitelikeacatslife yes that is an option.

What about the sids risk of her sleeping on an old mattress that hundreds of other babies have slept on? That's my biggest worry.

I oser to take a padded mattress booster incase the mattress was rubbish and not worry about any kind of SIDS risk at all, he was in the same room as is after all. The cot pictured looks absolutely fine.

Lcb123 · 14/04/2023 14:04

At 8 months I would, not sure why other babies using it would make a difference

FlounderingFruitcake · 14/04/2023 14:10

I’d use the hotel cot and I wouldn’t be remotely worried about the mattress with a 8 month old.

However, IDK about TUI but aren’t you usually allowed 2 checked baby items for free e.g. car seat and travel cot. I personally wouldn’t take it because it’s yet another thing to transport but if it’s just the luggage allowance holding you back then you may want to double check.

mynameiscalypso · 14/04/2023 14:16

The SIDS risk at 8 months is really really low - it peaks at 3/4 months and then decreases. I wouldn't worry about it at all.

fairgame84 · 14/04/2023 14:17

@Lcb123 because for sids your not supposed to use a second hand mattress as it increases the risk.

@FlounderingFruitcake you get one item, either a stroller or a car seat. Unless you book a ski holiday with them then you get 2 items, car seat, stroller or travel cot.

Could you hire a cot and buy a new mattress whilst out there ?

I really couldn’t be bothered though. Life is for living. Enjoy your holidays.

Scalessayeek · 14/04/2023 14:21

They advise to look for rios, tears and sagging. You will be able to see if you are happy with the mattress when you go. It would not cross my mind not to use one and we had similar to the metal one on holiday last year. I would be hesitant with the wooden one if your LO is sitting up though.

HernamewasNOLA · 14/04/2023 14:21

I’d use the wooden one definitely. If you feel really uncomfortable though and can afford to bring a travel cot then go for it

maddy68 · 14/04/2023 14:23

I would yes

Smartiepants79 · 14/04/2023 14:31

I would use the wooden one.
I wouldn’t worry about SIDS with an 8 month old.
Can tooth arrange the position of the cot so that it is between wall and bed so no falling out??
Put a cat net over the top to also discourage climbing? 8 months is reasonably young to climb like that. Sleep sacks also help stop the climbing.

Freshlycutgrasss · 14/04/2023 14:34

I used the hotel cot when DC was a similar age. It was wooden and absolutely fine.

We also went with TUI and they dont count baby items in your luggage allowance so we were able to take pushchair etc for free and it goes through the over sized luggage area. Travel cots should be included with this but not sure if you can have both cot & pushchair. You should be able to check this on the TUI web page searching for pushchair or baby luggage.

We packed the pushchair in a special travel bag for it and also stuffed it full of nappies, wipes etc as they dont charge for the weight so we were able to take lots more stuff with us without having to pay extra.

Have a lovely trip

Topseyt123 · 14/04/2023 14:35

I would use the hotel one.

deplorabelle · 14/04/2023 14:38

You can get a tent style travel cot that you could fit in a suitcase. They are fairly lightweight and useful in a lot of situations. We ended up selling the big travel cot

Always say yes to the hotel cot too though. We used to keep our cases in it to stop the baby unpacking them, and sometimes we needed it to block off a hazard in the room. You can take the sheet off to use as a playmat.

goody2shooz · 14/04/2023 14:40

@fairgame84 the hotel ones look fine - just take a mattress protector and sheet and baby will be fine.

SaltyGod · 14/04/2023 14:46

We've always used the hotel ones without any concerns from an early age

jannier · 14/04/2023 14:48

The wooden one doesn't look deep enough for a baby that can sit up I'd be asking if the base goes down or ask family if they could get a travel cot

Prangeal · 14/04/2023 14:51

Hmm I’m not sure what I would do. But if you’re worried then just use a travel cot for your own peace of mind. Can you buy one out there to save on luggage allowance?
