Family holiday in Ireland?

Ohalpro · 09/04/2023 21:30

We are a family of 3 (one dd aged 10) and thinking of a summer holiday in Ireland this year. I’ve never been anywhere apart from Dublin but would like to go somewhere rural or coastal. Does anyone have any recommendations?

We’d like to stay somewhere self catering, where you can walk to a village/ shop … we don’t need lots of entertainment but a few things to visit or do would be fun

Northern Ireland is in Ireland as is Southern Ireland, Western and Eastern Ireland. It’s all Ireland.

No it is not. Ireland is the name of country. NI is not in that country.

NI is part of the UK, not in the EU, pounds sterling, NHS, GCSE's, Sunak and the King.
Ireland is a totally seperate country: Currency is the EURO, in the EU, HSE, Leaving Certs, Varadker and Higgins.

They are two different countries. How is it possible people still do not know this?

3luckystars · 11/04/2023 12:12

Wales is in the UK but is still Wales

Marblessolveeverything · 11/04/2023 12:28

Northern Ireland is on the Island of Ireland. While it is currently occupied by a colonising entity it still remains on the sod.

And that makes absolutely no difference to the fact that NI is not in the country of Ireland.

This is not difficult, people. The nice thing about facts is that they remain true no matter what your opinion of them is.

If you're advising people about holidays, make sure you are looking at the right country.

JaneJeffer · 11/04/2023 13:50

@Ohalpro you can fly to Knock from Bristol and hire a car there.

Radiatorvalves · 11/04/2023 13:54

Do check out the price of hire cars… they’ve gone stratospheric. Might be cheaper to go on ferry with own car. Depends on how long you’re there for.

Lots of amazing places to visit.

FluffyPinkSocks · 11/04/2023 14:01

Anywhere from Donegal, along the west coast down to Cork. Beaches galore, lots to do. Ireland is a beautiful country, even more so on a good day, but be prepared for rain! Accommodation can be expensive and booked out well in advance. A lot of repeat tourists every year. You could fly to Knock Airport if you’re thinking of Donegal-Galway area, otherwise possibly to Cork airport for the more southern counties.

Northern Ireland is not in the country known as the Republic of Ireland (due to a colonising occupier). However, it is a geographical fact that it is part of the landmass known as Ireland.

Ireland is the name of the island as well as the country. The OP did not say that she was confining herself to the state rather than the island and seemed happy to accept recommendations for areas in NI.
Why are you intent on causing trouble?

Ireland is the name of the country. I merely want British people to have the first clue where they may be going, or indeed have even gone to.
OP asked for info for a family holiday in Ireland. Not for a family holiday on the island of Ireland that could also include another part of the UK.

It's not hard. If asked for holidays in Spain, would you tell me to go to Gibraltar?

You weren't really adressing the OP though, you were addressing pps and I think the people giving advice on here are most likely very well aware of the existence of the border!

If you simply wanted to point out the difference between Ireland the country and NI to the OP you could have done that far more politely.
Comments like "this is not difficult, people" are not needed, thank you.

FunnyHunny · 11/04/2023 14:59

and people wonder how the troubles in Ireland lasted so long 😀

Ahem, Northern Ireland

FunnyHunny · 11/04/2023 15:02

😁

Dishwasherdisaster · 11/04/2023 15:07

Indeed @JaneJeffer 😀
Sometimes you do need to distinguish the two of course. Don't think this is one of those times and even if it was, nobody needs to be rude while doing so.

They clearly are not aware if you see previous comments. They have no clue.

The Troubles were IN THE UK.

This thread is Bord Fáilte personified ☘️

HandScreen · 11/04/2023 15:18

@IamKlaus Actually, Ireland is the name of the island. There is no country called Ireland. There is the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. At least get it right if you're going to try to be a dickhead on a thread about holidays.

Dishwasherdisaster · 11/04/2023 15:18

😂😂

Dishwasherdisaster · 11/04/2023 15:21

Sorry, that was for @JaneJeffer.
The name of the country is Ireland @HandScreen. ROI is often used but is not the official name, it's the description of the State.

There is a country called Ireland, its IRELAND you moron.

Is there a country called France? Or Greece? Or is there only The Republic of France, or the Hellenic Republic?

The Republic of Ireland is the descriptor, the name of the country is simply IRELAND. It's the fucking constitution.

You do not know the basic information of the only country your country shares a land border with. Idiots.

HandScreen · 11/04/2023 15:24

Jesus Christ, calm down and get a life.

Anyway, OP, I hope you have a lovely holiday in Ireland! People are generally nicer than @IamKlaus, I swear!

Dishwasherdisaster · 11/04/2023 15:26

Yes we are OP, seriously!!
Hope you have a lovely holiday too (guessing it'll probably be in France at this stage).

JaneJeffer · 11/04/2023 15:26

Calm down @IamKlaus you'll do yourself an injury.

Ireland and Northern Ireland are two different countries on the same island. That's it. Simple. No need for anyone to get so het up about it.

The OP can visit one or both.
