GHIC - proof of residency

Dh applied for new GHIC cards via nhs website to replace expired EHICs. They are now requesting proof of residency despite entering ni numbers. Is this the norm?

Lots of people living abroad getting them to use abroad and getting the NHS to pay in my experience, expats who think they are entitled to free health care when they should be paying for it where they are or getting insurance

I've just applied, and got, a GHIC for myself, DH and DD and wasn't asked for proof of residency

Lcb123 · 09/04/2023 16:55

Yes this happened when I got mine

The residency requirement is less straightforward than some seem to think.

For none UK residents it’s been clarified in recent years as being issued by the authority that issues your S1 (which you get by virtue of your social charges - NI- history) but frankly I’m not surprised people sometimes get asked for proof of residency..

“You qualify for a GHIC if you’re a British citizen and meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • You’re a legal resident of an EU country or Switzerland with a valid registration S1, E121, E106 or E109 form issued by the UK (forms that serve as proof of paid healthcare by the NHS if you live in any of the EU countries or Switzerland.”

GHIC - Global Health Insurance Card - SchengenVisaInfo.com

Since Brexit was finalised (January 1, 2021), several important changes have been implemented between the UK and other European countries. One important change is the replacement of the European Health Insurance Card, which is no longer valid for UK ci...

Yeah, DS had to show proof of residency (UK citizen living in NI but also has Irish passport), it was a right PITA. I ordered new ones for me, DH and other DC at the same time - as I was lead name (UK passport only) and didn’t need to declare any other passports for anyone else it was really straightforward. I should have just ordered for DS too and posted on to him but I thought it would be easier to get it sent direct. Little did I know.

Smurf123 · 09/04/2023 17:42

Can someone explain how this works for someone from Northern Ireland? I can't figure it out. Born and live in NI, have Irish passport - so dual citizenship uk/Ireland

WarningToTheCurious · 09/04/2023 17:45

That was DS’s situation - had to show 2 proofs of address (bank statement / signed mortgage or rental agreement / utility bills etc). Had to scan and email.

LIZS · 09/04/2023 17:45

Thanks, seems mixed. To be clear we are UK resident and have lived at same address for over 15 years.

We are all UK / British citizens and have always lived in the UK with the exception of a few spells overseas for work. It seemed to be declaring the Irish passport for DS that caused the issue. When I applied for DH and the other DC I was not asked to declare any other passports for them.

Update: both dh and my applications have been approved. Took a few goes to upload documents successfully.

My 17 year old has just applied for one tonight for travelling when she's 18. She's also been asked for proof of residency but hardly has anything as doesn't pay any bills. No second citizenship either. Very odd.

LIZS · 11/04/2023 22:37

Does seem a bit random. Any official letters or provisional driving licence?

She's got a few college application letters and is waiting to see if they're acceptable.

They were very strict with us about it having to be one of the examples on their list - keep your fingers crossed!
