Titanic Belfast- has anyone been?

Ilovecleaning · 07/04/2023 15:28

DH and I would like a 4 day holiday in Belfast next year to do the Titanic Experience, stay at the Titanic Hotel and have a trip to the Giant’s Causeway.
Have you been? Would you recommend? Did you enjoy it.
I am asking because DH and I have had some bad luck financially in the last couple of years and we have to make careful plans. We can’t afford to just give it a go like we used to. It will cost about £1250 not including dinners and spends which I know is not a lot of money but it is to us.
I’d like opinions from ‘real’ people who have been!
By the way I know we could stay in a cheaper hotel but we really want a treat. DH is 75+ and needs some comfort these days 😊

The Titanic Hotel is absolutely wonderful - literally my most favourite hotel on the planet. I've stayed twice now and plan to go back again. But then i've been Titanic obsessed since I was a young girl for some strange reason (many years before James Cameron's film came out!)

There is so much wonderful artwork and photographs spread out throughout the hotel which you don't see if you just visit for drinks or dinner. It is incredibly atmospheric and it just blows my mind. it is worth every penny! Drawing Room Two is a wonderful place and you will probably not want to leave! You can take a DIY tour of the hotel and visit Thomas Andrews office amongst lots of other really interesting rooms and nooks &;crannies.

The slipways outside the hotel where Titanic and Olympic were built are also incredibly atmospheric, especially at night.

The Tiranic Experience left me in tears the first time I went. it gets incredibly moving towards the end 😢 There are new exhibits there for this year aswell.

Just go, if you even only have a passing interest in Titanic and the White Star Line you will love it I promise. Don't be tempted to stay anywhere else.

Belfast-Giant's Causeway bus

There's some private firms too - Paddywagon is one.

Thank you so much for taking the trouble to send lots of useful information. And I’m glad you recommend the Titanic Hotel. There are cheaper hotels but we want some comfort in a hotel with restaurants and bars. Someone said it’s a little bit out of the way but we hope to do a package where we fly to Belfast are picked up by coach plus outings by coach so there will be no need for car hire, taxis or public transport.
thank you again and best wishes.

The open top bus tour is really good (and I say that as a bit of a snob who usually thinks such things are tacky!). I thought it was really good value.

My DH loves bus tours 😊. Everyone makes it sound exciting I feel that our 3 night won’t be enough! But we have done a lot of city breaks in the past and 3, preferably 4 nights is usually enough. 2 nights, no way. Too short. Thanks again.

I'd price it up yourself. £1250 seems a lot. It's a fantastic city break, very reasonable for taxis, restaurants etc.

Thanks for the tip. I shall certainly look into. My DH is 75+ and suffers with arthritis which affects his mobility which is why we are looking at a package including flights, transfers and coach outings. But thanks for the tip x

Sounds wonderful. Titanic museum is fab and a coach trip along the north coast to Giant's Causeway will be fabulous too. I envy you staying in the Titanic hotel.
Weather not always great in Northern Ireland but if you are prepared for that, you'll have a great time.

Marmunia10661975 · 08/04/2023 15:20

If you drive up the coast road from Larne, you will arrive at the Giant's Causeway. Lovely drive especially on a good day! Don't go up the motorway!

@Ilovecleaning im so jealous of your trip. I really hope I can do similar with DH when our kids are old enough to be left at home. I went to Belfast with one of the kids last time but DH has never been. The Belfast locals were so welcoming and we loved every minute last time. Have an amazing time.

I'm from Derry and would rarely have a good word to say about Belfast but the Titanic exhibition is fabulous. Last time we went to the Giants Causeway the accessibility shuttle bus wasn't running, so people had turned up, paid and couldn't actually got to see the causeway as its a bit of a walk and the path leading down is v steep. As long as you check that out then it will be good. I am always a bit meh about the causeway but like to go to Dunluce Castle on the way which is great. That's if you get the opportunity on your bus tour.

I agree, taxis are very reasonable. Airport buses are great to get into the city too.

The train journey from Belfast around to Derry is amazing too. Just beautiful.

I'm biased though as I live here. It's a great place.

Can I jump on this to ask about black cab tours (or similar). Are they suitable for children (age 8ish?).
