Going to the US for 3 weeks and want to get some insurance sorted. Apart from transport home in case of..., what do I have to make sure is included? Are there variations or are most just standard packages?

You need, amongst other things, really high cover for medical expenses.

Any average price of insurance? I'm not in UK but I can compare. I found one at the bank here and it was about 20 Euro for 1 year of cover but that can't be enough to cover all medical expenses can it?

It can be quite cheap now, but you just need to make sure that you have several million in medical expenses cover.
Read the details carefully.
If you will be doing any sports, check those carefully
Declare all medical conditions, tests that you have had, medication, visits to the GP etc as they are quick to turn down cover if you have any preexisting condition that hasn't been declared.

Its often better to go to a broker to take out cover which includes health components as they are then responsible for asking the right questions of you.

Thanks, good advice. I'm a travel insurance vigin - you can tell we never go on holiday! That's what you get when you live abroad, holidays are spent visiting 'back home'!

I don't ever buy any, as DH sorts it all - and since hes a super duper insurance professional thats good.

However, I do have to listen to him ranting about what people should do about insurance !

Billions of pounds of medical cover (and personal liability too I suppose) - other than that, just the standard stuff for cancellation, possessions etc.

From Which:

minimum criteria:

at least £1 million of medical cover in Europe, and £2 million in the USA and the rest of the world. This includes an air ambulance to get you home, if necessary

at least £1,500 baggage and belongings cover. Policies often have a single item limit

at least £3,000 cancellation or curtailment cover, including prepaid excursions and the costs of getting you home (for example, if a close relative falls ill)

personal liability cover of at least £1 million. This covers any costs as a result of you injuring someone, or damaging their property

a 24-hour emergency line and cover for legal expenses

membership of the Financial Ombudsman Service. If you have a dispute that you can't settle with the insurer, you can complain to the ombudsman for free. They can force the insurer to settle claims and pay compensation.
