Best city to visit in Italy??

I am so stuck! I’m booking a 3 night stay for me and my husband for his 30th in July! I can’t for the life of me decide where to go, he’s mentioned Naples before but Google just tells me it’s dangerous and not the best place to go! (Happily have someone prove that statement wrong with a great experience!) Rome could be good but I know we will want a mixture of city life, good restaurants, sight seeing but also a beach day too!? Is this even possible? Grateful to anyone who reads this!

I'm in love with Venice but I know it's not everyone's cup of tea.

Other than that I've enjoyed: Florence, Ravenna (so pretty!) and Padua. Rimini was lovely for the beach.

We're doing the west coast of Sicily this summer :)

There's too much to do in Rome fo fit in a beach day, in my opinion. 3 nights is not very long at all, with travelling included (essentially 2 full days) especially when you have to factor in travelling to the beach.

Naples can be wonderful but you do have to be sensible, but there are a lot of guides online about how to do Naples well.

One option would be to go to Milan and do a day trip to Como - not a beach as such but absolutely beautiful and by the water, and super easy train ride. Garda has beaches but I can't comment on accessibility from Milan.

July italy will be hot hot hot, so just bear that in mind. The lakes can be scorching but also a blessed relief from the cities.
Alternatively you could do Rome or Naples and then look to travel to somewhere like Sperlonga beach which is a 2.5 hour drive but a glorious beach.

Personally, I'd decide between a city break and a beach break rather than trying to fit both into one very short trip.

I’ve enjoyed Florence and Milan for long weekends.

dew141 · 06/04/2023 13:19

I've been to Rome, Venice, Naples, Pisa and Florence recently. Naples was my least favourite, quite grimy and industrial.

Pisa tiny, Florence nice but I'd vote for Venice followed by Rome. There's something magical about wandering around the canals and finding a restaurant for dinner. You don't have to spend the whole time in the very crowded part.

Maraudingmarauders · 06/04/2023 13:21

Alternatively you could look to Puglia - Bari for instance is a great city and has some easy to access beaches, similar for Brindisi. They might be busy depending on when in July you go because it's where the Italians go on holiday! We loved Puglia so much though, totally.different feel to Lazio and the North.

We loved Turin for museums but not the best city for general site seeing.
There is always the cinque terre you can cover by train which is beautiful towns, food and beaches - Genoa, although a bit industrial is an easy base to get there.

Naples is brilliant, I'd definitely recommend and, having visited a number of times, I've never felt like I was in a dangerous environment!

Desert76 · 06/04/2023 13:24

I love Venice and Florence, but for a 3 day trip with a beach day, what about Genoa?

Right on the coast anyway, but you could explore outside the city for a beach. It’s not as popular with international tourists, but a great city nonetheless.

DreamingofNuneaton · 06/04/2023 13:24

How about Palermo? Some great beaches nearby

LIZS · 06/04/2023 13:29

How about somewhere like Ischia, within easy reach of Nsples. Rome would be stifling in July.

Wishimaywishimight · 06/04/2023 13:31

I was in Venice a couple of weeks ago it was fabulous, really loved it!

SwedishEdith · 06/04/2023 13:35

Italy in July will be hot and I'd avoid quite a few of these cities at that time because of the heat. I think Genoa is underrated and agree Milan or Bergamo with a trip to the lakes would be a good option.

Lovetotravel123 · 06/04/2023 13:36

You could try an underdog city like Genoa and then have a day trip and beach day to Cinque Terre.

misssunshinenow · 06/04/2023 13:52

Genoa + Cinque Terre, Naples + Ishia / Capri or Amalfi / Positano, Venice + Lido di Jesolo. I loved Naples and the day trips from there. I haven't been in a few years but I never felt unsafe. The barber did tell my husband to put his Rolex away tho!

maddy68 · 06/04/2023 13:55

Venice.
Sorrento and capri
Don't bother with piza

BarrelOfOtters · 06/04/2023 13:57

I loved Naples but it's not everyone's cup of tea. If I just had 3 days I'd skip the beach day. I love Rome but it'll be crowded. Venice was fantastic. Milan is on my go to list.

purplecorkheart · 06/04/2023 14:13

I loved Venice but it is not for everyone and also probably will be packed in July. I wasn't a fan of Naples. Verona is nice. I wouldn't bother with Milan.

To be honest for a three day trip I would skip the beach day and I would look at what cities airlines in your nearby airports fly to as you really haven't that much time in Italy and do not want to spend a lot of time traveling.

Miriam101 · 06/04/2023 14:13

Bari? Meant to be a lovely little city and it's right on the sea. Most of Italy's "star" cities are inland, so combining city and beach not really practical: that even goes for Rome if you're talking three nights. It's a bit of a trek to Ostia and it'd take a day out (and even then it's not everyone's cup of tea).

Personally Napoli is the absolute bomb....but again, it's not for everyone.

ChiefPearlClutcher · 06/04/2023 14:17

Not Naples

Agree Cinque Terre
Or Florence and Lucca - love love love Lucca.

Does it have to be Italy? Berlin is a fab city break. Awesome food.

I went to Naples a few years ago with my then 11 year old. Absolutely loved it.
We travelled around and did go to Rome too on that holiday (the people there were awful and rude).
We were warned about Naples being dangerous but didn't find it at all so.
I found the people extremely friendly and welcoming and it's far cheaper than Rome.

So1invictus · 06/04/2023 14:29

For 3 days I'd do Rome, Naples, Florence or Verona (you can get to Venice from Verona)
I live in Puglia and Lecce would be nicer than Bari.
July will be hot but Italians holiday in August, though groups of teens will be holidaying alone by July.

shash1982 · 06/04/2023 14:33

Sorrento with a day trip to capri/amalfi coast by boat & you could include visiting pompeii?

I really liked Venice but don't think you'd have time to travel to a beach as well as see it all.
Loved Rome but again, don't think you'd have the time to properly see it when combining with a beach trip.

maranella · 06/04/2023 14:35

I love Italy, but July is such a busy time to go to somewhere like Rome or Naples. I was in Paris last July and OMG it was heaving and soooo hot. Not a great combination really if you want to sightsee (I only went because we had overseas visitors who wanted to go).

Honestly, if you want city + beach for a 3-day trip I'd recommend Malaga, Valencia or Barcelona, which are cities right on the beach and so the two can be easily combined.

If it has to be Italy then I guess Venice is probably your best bet as there are some beach resorts close to the city - but the canals can be smelly and it will certainly be very busy in Venice in July.

ChiefPearlClutcher · 06/04/2023 14:44

San Sebastian is also lovely with a beautiful beach

GCAcademic · 06/04/2023 14:45

I was also going to suggest San Sebastián, assuming you’re not totally set on Italy. Great restaurants too.
